Nice to see someone posting relistic speeds for once.
70mph is a good speed for a P20 with an XR2.
To see over that takes quite alot of work in setting up the boat and finding the right prop.
Don't forget that even when you think you have the right prop chances are that you still need to get it worked.

To be honest number of people in the boat and fuel in the front or not she stilll never seems to break much over 60mph?

Maybe I will wait to see if the jets change after "run in" makes much difference.

Agreed like I said all of the boats we have ever had p16 included they have always run well with no scary handling problems and I have to say part from the Bat Boats @ Allhallows and the legendary Ian - (I can beat Bat Boats in a phantom), I cant remeber last time someone beat me or my brothers in a fun day race.

Its just you read some of the posts on this site and wonder what the F*ck u ae doing wrong when people say they are achieveing these speeds.

Carl to be fair to the 68mph claim I have nvere gone out with just fumes in the fuel tank the back seat removed and just me in the boat - so it may well
still run at that speed

I think Ian Sterling's P21 probably only does mid sixties, and it's unlikely, without a very special motor and setup, to go all that much quicker.

Silver, just not filling the fwd tank should help, keep all the weight as far aft as possible if you want top speed.

I assume you can switch off that fwd tank so it doesn't get any weight in, unless you want it.

What is the fwd fuel tank made of? how much does it weigh empty?

Aluminium i think not sure what it weighs.
Like I said I notice the differance but its not massive if its empty or full. Tazs boat should be the same maybe its engine height on his boat that creates the rocking. Also noticed on tazs boat that it will bounce up and down @ about 35-40mph is this called porpoising or something like that? If you power on through it levels out him dosent really do that either whihc leads me to think its weight distribution problem on Tazs boat.
Props seem to be a bit of black art so i would look at the weight first taz

Having a full tank of fuel in the bow should make a massive difference to top speed! you need to look into your set up.

However, I expect it runs well in a chop.

my p21 tandem is (and i know alot of people say this but ive had it checked to make sure by someone who builds mclaren formula one cars) a lightweight carbon fibre model its an ex proven race boat and ive set it up how ive been shown by Tony donald who used to race in a boat called team tangle foot a revenger i believe?! Jon prob knows him! Everything is lightweight to the best i could get it! even the seats you can lift with one finger! Its got a worked prop as johnny boat dude said , the fuel tank has been moved to a belly tank ,an original fibreglass bow tank is fitted and an xr2 that has been played with slightly since i bought it and thats it!my personal best in it is 68 but like i said in the other thread the person who got 75 really knows how to drive a phantom and will be driving it for me while i nav in the littlehampton regatta!

Are you entering the F200 production class at littlehampton?
That'll give you a chance to race against the B23's, and probably more importantly for you, Ian Sterling's P21.

And if you are, I would edit the line out in your post that mentions the motor having been 'played with'

I might be wrong, but I don't think Phantom did any Carbon fibre work.

OK, F200 is basically a '200hp' class, ribs & hardboats, it's an evolution of Class 3C (the traditional 2 litre class) and Ribs, which includes a 'basic' type category. The production class is targeted at boats exactly like yours, and includes novice crews - if your boat is as quick as you say, there's a fair chance you could walk away with some silverware - As Jon notes Ian Sterling is running mid 60's.
As far as it being your first race - there was a boat in exactly the same situation at torquay, the OOD basically gave them an individual briefing about everything they needed to do.

I would encourage anyone with a 200hp engine to have a go!

No dis respect but given flat calm conditions it dosnt take much driving skill to trim the engine up keep the wheel straight and hold your foot flat down. I dont see how "really knowing how to drive a phantom" comes into it in terms of spped trails to the point that your gain 7mph? unless you have a nitros button ?

i agree with that to a point, but when ringing the last few mph, even on flat water, skill will help a lot, when you've got the boat trimmed 'way up' and it wants to walk about like a bastud on it's heel, you gotta keep on the ball, or it'll all go horribly wrong!

No Handling problems on my machine given mill pond conditions on the river and no body elses wake I let the girlfirend drive the boat flat out on full trim with a massive rooster tale - my mother could do it!

Its on the sea you need the skill i.e. in a race when you have to follow the course rather than hit waves head on etc. (I am not talking about S&F balancing on bowling balls with CMC Powerlifters either before everyone starts).

if you can trim your boat to the point that you get a huge rooster, without having to 'drive it', that's why you're only doing 60, your set up is wrong.

There's no way you should be able to do that, not without keeping your witts about you.

Way too much weight in the bow is what I reckon.

Maybe I just consider it all a walk in the park after the Allhallows race! - NO weight in the bow once the front tank is empty.

but you don't know what the 'empty' tank weighs, that's why I asked what it's made of, and what it weighs.

a very small increase in weight up front, will reduce the speed quite a bit.
