Auto meter Tacho wiring

I've just gone to fit this which I brought from Rex in preperation for my new powerhead.

http://shopping.rexmar.com/Merchant2...=ammulchrtachs

It states that this is an outboard gauge but the wiring on the back is different from the 8k gauge I took out. Instead of having terminals it has its own loom, black 12v - battery, white 12v + for the light, red ignition then I think its a green wire to coil negative. Can I use this on a merc outboard?
Now, whats confusing me is that on one part of the fitting instructions it states this cant be used on a 12pole/6 pulse outboard then below that staes that this tacho can only be set to 12pole/6pulse.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

It has 3 tiny switches behind the cap yes, you can set it to 4, 6 or 8 cylinder.

Oops, I thought I'd replied to this yesterday

It's normally switches 1 & 2 off, and switch 3 on.
