I agree also, that engine is way too small for V8.I've seen one on a ski race boat in chasewater years back maybe 87 or sommat, and the cowl wouldn't even fit in the boat it was about 3ft cubed(only a guestimate there) but I remember it being like nothing i've seen before. I forget which boat it was on but had a huge gill bracket made up and a load of bungies attached to one side so the driver could hold on to it for an hours race. No hydraulic steering in them days, sounded sweet and went like stink, shame the skier couldn't hold on to it though.I never saw it agian after that.

That's the V8 F1 short.
400 bhp production. Not many were made. Today they are museum pieces. 10000 rpms. Real monsters. There was one which was said to have near 550 bhp. It's also this one which made the outboard speed record (+/-160mph).
Nothing like the ordinary consumer version.
It has, for instance, a removeable exhaust chest, heads and pistons rods were held together by 4 bolts instead of 2 (?),...
I believe they were very expensive too.. no spare parts available anymore.
I'm going to use 2 of them on my bernico f1. I sincerely hope it floats!

Oops... you guys probably are right. Judging by the engine-size on the picture I thought this should be a V8... Guess I'm mistaken. I looked at the ad and indeed it doesn't mention "V8"...
Anyhow : let's say it's a V6 225 or 235 then...
it's tuned upto 300hp, it's a rebuilt and has 40-50 hours on it...

Those omc V6 loopers were popular engines and many aftermarket parts were produced. All kinds of mods were readily available which made tuning easy.
Look in your own country to the ring 21 with the 2*225 V6 evinrude at the Geelse Kanaalfeesten. It finished first i believe.
So yes, you can improve performance on them savely, but 300 hps looks a bit steep and everyone says its "tuned". But is it? To be honest, take an engine which is unspoiled. Then work on it yourself!
Dont know about the 235 but its older. NOt to keen on the engine unless it's virtually free of cost. Do a compression check. Differences more than 10 psi means there is work to do.
Yes the F1 is a rare breed. Still, i never found out (by reading) why they stopped "evolving" them. It could have been a succes. When they were introduced, nothing touched them.
This is why mercury came up with the Merc Cosworth engines V6 2.7(?), 300 hp, which were absolute crap and today you can still find them very cheap.

Didn't Danny Bertells run a 21 bernico with twin V8's when he won world waterski title?

Yes you are right! 3.4 275hp. Based on a race engine T4?

I saw a R21 with twins on the last 'Belgian Boat Show'. Think it could be this one, since BBS supports the Geelse Kanaalfeesten (or the other way around)
It was fully equipped for waterski-racing. Huge transom setback bracket! Double cable steering, which suprised me a bit, I expected hydro on twins...
See the pic

I found this picture of a 'clean' Johnson 235hp, that I wanted to share.
It looks just the same...
Now, things change a bit... Not the big V8, but the smaller V6 235hp. (tuned and max 50hours since rebuilt) It makes this Tazmanian-boat a little more attractive to buy...

It will be a lot easier on your wallet and not much slower, so yes, looks good to me, if the engine is in good condition. Spare parts are not that easy to come by, i guess. Engine is pre 90' for sure.
I was wondering, are those Kiekhaefer tabs or Dana?

They look like Kiekhaefer rams (the square alloy type) mebbe home grown tabs, we did the same with our 'T' class boat, buying the rams and hoses from merc, and fabricating our own tabs.

Owner told me Nico B. repaired those tabs 2 months ago. I wonder why they needed repair
Don't have experience with these (probably) Kiekhaefer tabs. Do you think they are any good with this boat setup ? (I see they are quite long, single hydro-cilinder, mounted horizontally)
I'm gonna go on-site next saturday to see this boat. Gonna ask for testrun, then or later. What can I expect from these tabs ?
(Did some trimtabs-searching : http://boatmad.com/forum/showpost.ph...09&postcount=4)
