So why do you need a drill ????

I know of one fitted to an Evinrude Fitch engine and major modifications had to be done in this case, bit more than just a drill!

Dan,
I have had great luck with several products from bob's, but I would not recommend the exhaust modification. In order to use it you have to drill holes in the verticle surface of the mid. This weakens the mid in a place that has a lot of stress.
Instead, I would reomend doing like mercury high performance does on the non-offshore 260 and 280. Drill 5x 1/2 holes on the bottom of the mid above the cavitation plate. You can drill throught the cav plate if you do not want to take the motor apart, but I would recemend pulling the powerhead, removing the can, and drilling down from the inside form a much cleaner job.
This will not adversly effect the structural integrity of the mid, still give you the releived exhaust, and give the releived exhaust sound.
good luck,
fish

I'm not sure that is where Fish was talking about.
I think he was refering to the under side of the leg (you can't get to it unless you remove the gearbox).
It's the area thats about 30mm above the cavitation plate, and runs parallel with it.

It is suggested that drilling holes in the back of the housing can weaken it significantly - ya gotta be careful yer gearbox doesn't fall off when towing eh Mr Rob.
Anyway, the solution I believe Mr Fish referred to, and a solution I quite like because it's subtle, and also possible to close off again once you've deafened yerself, is shown by Talon2.5 here:

you are right Matt, that is the area (in talon 2.5's thread) I am suggesting to drill. Skip (the guy who did the article) made that one so he could cap the holes if he wanted to since many lakes around here have noise restrictions. If you were not worried about being able to cap the holes, then I am suggesting drilling 5 holes on each side in the same place. That will give the relief without weakening the mid.
addotionally, if you are going to pull the powerhead to drill and have not done so already, it would be a good time to put in solid motor mounts if you currently are running the rubber ones. Bob's sells these and they are a good product.
cheers,
fish
