Change shaft or replace case

Mid arrived in Mallorca today, will collect it tomorrow. Looking at the manual, for changing the drive shaft. Not a simple job, specially without correct tools. Have been told it's a two hour job, by someone who knows what they're doing and with the right tools. The trouble is, over here anyone with more than a waiters degree costs a fortune.

Does anyone think I would be better off buying a new gear case, complete with drive shaft. Obviously one that is known etc.

Will check out prices for having the job done but any suggestions from you lads, would be appreciated.

Thanks again

Peter

Appreciated. I'll be taking the box with shaft, removed from mid. What do you think is the better option. Peter

sell your box and buy a bullet box with a 20" shaft. Probably around £700 for a decent one

Hi Burty,

What do you think mine is worth, standard 25" 20 hours from new. Also, do you know anyone who may have one of the others, that you mentioned.

Exclamation

Hi All, Just when it looked like it was going good.

Took power head off today, stripped gearbox from mid and mid from saddle. Fitted 20" mid to saddle. Got all the exhaust box, mountings and exhaust plate fitted. Cut down water pipe and fitted to exhaust plate.

Looking at the height of the mid, when the gear case goes back on, the water intake holes will be above the bottom of the boat, will that be ok, will it get enough water to keep it cool?

I've got the 20" shaft, ready to have put into my gear case and can get the shift shaft cut and welded. Just concerned that when I have the 20" shaft, fitted to my gear case, it wont get enough cooling water. What do you thing.

Cheers

Peter

Is the saddle on the transom? Cannot see a problem, with a 20 inch shaft, but the Phantom guys will be able to confirm for definite.

hi peter
if box is bolted up to midsection the bullet of the gearbox looks like it should level up to bottom of hull, cannot see a problem.

Hi again Brian, Just measured it exactly. When bolted up, the point of the bullet will be 8cm / 3.1/8" below the hull. The lowest hole in the water intakes will be just above the bottom of the hull. Will that be ok????

Swivel bracket and steering ar

Hi all, Stripped steering arm off, to replace bushes, as it had movement. I've found the bushes to be ok but there is a problem with the bottom yoke. It doesn't appear to be worn, nor does the spline, in fact they both still have paint on them. The spindle also still has paint on it, apart from at the top, front and bottom, rear, I guess these are the main wearing points.

There is about 2mm up and down movement, without the mid bolted on, so I'm having a nylon spacer made for this. As far as the bottom yoke is concerned, I thought of using lock seal on it. Has anybody tried this or know a better way to tighten the fit?
