Changed Drive Shaft ????????
Hi, Just collected my 200 Mariner gear case. Had a 20" drive shaft fitted, to replace the original 25". When I turn the shaft, in both directions, out of gear (I think, prop not moving), there's a notch feeling, not smooth. Is this correct. I did supply theem with a new, full, set of shims.

What does it feel like with a bit of 'upward pull' on the drive shaft while rotating it. has it got oil in it?

Hi, it's been secured and wont lift at all. Feels the same when I hold entire case off the ground and turn shaft. Yes it has been filled and it's upto the water pump base (when I re fit the pump)
Mechanic says this is correct but I find it hard to belive.

When the shaft is rotating the cut of the gears forces it upover(older pre-load types are the opposite and are pulled down) I would have said that if it felt smooth when pulled upover and taking up the endfloat, especially without oil that it would probably be OK. But it sounds a bit tight to me.
With a dry(no oil) gearbox you can just hear the pinion teeth tapping as you rotate the drive shaft back and forth the tiniest amount, I'm talking about probably less than one degree. There is a Mercury figure for the amount of backlash, I'll see if i can find it for you.
If you drain the oil see if you can feel/hear the free play. The difficult part is that you have both forward an reverse gears meshed at the same time, so one could be tight and the other loose. The tightness f the mesh is decide by 2 adjustments , the height of the pinion/bearing and how deep the forward gear sits in the cone of the housing.
it takes a lot of patience to get it right, If you don't think the mechanic who built it is that person, I would get a second opinion on it. The parts are very expensive if it blows

Thanks for the advice Marsham, I didn't think it felt right. I did question the mechanic and he assured me it was correct. It's diffecult to find a decent outboard mechanic over here.
I really don't want it going bang, will have to ask around.
Thanks again

Just one more point. Rough/smooth is very subjective. Did you rotate the box before the rebuild. If It hasn't come back the way it went out It isn't right.
Have you thought about doing it yourself? At least you would keep at it until it's right.

Just an update. I've noticed there is some side to side movement, when I wiggle the shaft. Has this got anything to do with it?

If the shaft is pressed down into the case, you may be able to feel a slight side to side movement of the shaft because the taper roller bearing is separated slightly. If you pull up on the shaft and press down on the gearbox, you should eliminate the sideways play but you should be able to feel a small amount of rotational backlash of the pinion to driven gears because in this position the clearance between them is at maximum.

Hi again, I'll go and try that now. I can actualy see the movement between the shaft and the gap between the shaft and the retaining nut.
I'll get back to you in about ten minutes.

Hi JW.
Just tried what you said, side to side does appear to go when pulled up. It still feels notchy though and I can still hear it catching on something. Is this right? I've worked as a fitter and mechanic, on cars, for most of my life, yet I wouldn't be happy with a joint like that, moving at those speeds, yet notchy when moved by hand. I may be totally wrong, that's why I didn't buy the tools and do it myself. I know nothing adout outboards.

Hi Marshan, Not much movement at all. Not an amount that you can actualy feel but there is a difference when pulled up. Peter

If you have say 25 thou of upward endfloat on the drive shaft any roughness should dissapear when pulled up. I'm wondering if one of the rollers has fallen out of the pinion race when the shaft was inserted that would also account for the extra side to side slack.
Just changing the drive shaft shouldn't need much setting up if the case and gear set has remained the same. Just a bit of shimming for the drive shaft
Sent you a PM

Peter, a very small amount of vertical movement is all you should be feeling so what you describe doesn't sound far wrong. Do make sure that the gear selection is truly in neutral and is not off centre because you could be feeling the dog clutch catching slightly. You will be able to feel the gears running together even when the unit is set up correctly but it shouldn't feel catchy. Be aware though, being remote from you, it's impossible to do more than give you a few pointers to check.

Hi JW, I think I've sorted it now. I took it back to the workshop and I worked on it with him. We added a slightly thicker shim and now, when I hold the shaft up, there's no notching, it's smooth. Still very little up and down movement and no oil in it yet. Taking complete boat / engine to workshop on Monday. Will run it up on the hose and see what we've got.
Thanks for yours and Marshan's help.

Update
Hi All,
Just an update. Went back to workshop yesterday evening, with engine back together. Filled box with oil and run it up. All appears ok, no heating up or unusual noises.
Today will tell !!!!!!!!!!!!
Will update later today.

Hi All,
Well, as expected, I think I have a water pressure problem. Running at just over 3000 RPM water pressure dropped to about 5 psi (tick over reading 10 / 11) Cavitation bad, had to trim right in to get going but once up and trimmed out, she wanted to fly. Couldn't get enough speed to check if chine walk had gone, water too rough and pressure worried me.
I guess I'm gonna have to think about lower water pickup. Maybe change the box for a CLE, maybe add a nose cone or some other water pickup.
Hope to get a better day soon and give it another try out. With calmer sea it will be easier to concentrate on the gauges etc.
Will update when tried again but any ideas welcome.
Peter

Dude you sure your guage is reading correctly? Mine doesnt register on tickover. You should really look out the back and see if you have water coming out the tell tails.

Video
Hi All,
It goes from bad to worse. I'm uploading some video from yesterday's run. Firstly: When I had the 25" leg on her, I recorded 57.3 MPH but had severe leaning to port side. Now, with the 20" leg, hole shot is worse, need to trim right down, to get out. When trimming up I get to the point where water presure gets low and on the last run, alarm went off. Max speed for all runs 53.2 MPH.
I am uploading video of all runs, any ideas welcome.
First one is Firring up and water pressure:
