Changing Flywheel on 250xs

Hi Guys/Girls I have never swapped or removed a flywheel before. I have a lightened and balanced flywheel for my 3l merc coming this week.

I take it all I have to do is undo the large nut holding it on, tap it off and swap them over?

Do I need to thread lock the new one on or do anything else at all?

Thanks Dave

You'll need a puller. The right tool for the job will make it easy, the wrong will be a right nightmare.

flywheel

Hi,
from painful experience it's not usually that simple, you may need a flywheel puller, they do them on ebay with a lifting eye as well for about £30.
Mine's been bloody invaluable! and you may need to apply a bit of heat i.e a heat gun or a blow torch to the flywheel. If somebody greased the crank splines you may have an easier time tho.

Never needed heat (so far) and I use a puller also from ebay, which like you oxo has been great with the lifting eye as well.

As an act of brilliance I typed "mercury" in with fly wheel puller lol

The only one in the UK says upto 220hp only though.........I have messages the seller, see what he has to say.

Do I threadlock the new one back on?

I don't know how different the 3.0 are to the 2.4/2.5 but assuming its the same/similar no thread lock should be needed.

If your going to get hands dirty, perhaps look at getting a service manual?

No I don't have a flywheel holder, never heard of one if I'm honest. Have several large torque wrenches. Not sure what setting they should be on for that though?

Any ideas anyone???

Mine came from snapon many many moons ago but still available.

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re=uk&tool=all

More expensive than 2p but cheaper than a new starter or even the dog on an earlier V6.

Dave! You want offshore kids, flywheel and power. Just buy a bigger motor. It will be easier lol

Brilliant thank you very much. Now I understand what the flywheel holder is for. I'm going to ask something silly now, but what if I just leave it in gear? Thanks Dave

The protector cap, where can I buy one ASAP from please? Thanks again
