CLE Gearbox problems

I drained my gearbox this weekend and the oil was really really thick.
The oil looked a pale olive green colour and it was thick like gloss paint.
Gav seems to think that it is taking in water and this has caused the oil to go 'funny'
Anyone had any problems like this?

Cheers

nah, oil and water dont mix
when you drained it the water would have come out first

Actually, I think merc gear oil has additives in so they do. I'll see if I can find where I read that.

Was it transparant/clear green?

If its been kept somewhere cold it will be thick like paint.

That does sound like its got water init. It should be clear like normal car oil, just green.

Whats the seal like in the fill/drain, the water could be forcing its way past there as you go along.

I dont remember there being any when I took the plugs out!
I remember when I 1st fitted it and tilted the engine up it did leak from the top part and it was a green clear liquid.

There are 2 small holes near the drain plag at the top, what are they for?

The top one is the vent, you drain and fill from the bottom one. Both fill/drain and vent should have sealing (gasket material) washers, check up in the actual recess the plug sits in. If you don't have them then chances are the water was coming in the fill/drain which is directly in the firing line being just infront of the cooling water pickups.

I don't recall any holes at the top near the vent
