cleaver on a phantom 21ft +200hp

Hi everyone !

I'd like your info on how a cleaver works on a Phantom 21 ft ?

I now use a 3 blade Mercury Marine Tempest Plus 14 1/2 x 25P
I want to try a 3 blade Mercury cleaver 14 x 26P

Happy with the Tempest, but curious about the cleaver.

Thanks !
T.

"absolutely no cleavers"

But Larby said in an answer to the post he had very good results in rough waters...

Please share your cleaver info. Thx !

The clever will give you transom lift = good in the rough but no bow lift in the flat so slower

Tried a 14x26 cleaver on my P20, great pick up and kept the boat level (stern lift) only trouble was every time we landed off a wave the boat hooked badly. Best props found for the 2.5 200 was either Hoss or Spinelli 14x24 spoonbill.

I always dismissed cleaver's for all the above reasons !! However when we did 3b worlds last year in Norway I borrowed a 14 1/4 x 26 Winrace and was so impressed that I bought one.

Gave 2-3 mph increase really easy to drive and handled really well although knocked RPM and acceleration a bit !!

yam drag

I ran a 22 Yam drag on my p21 ,one of the best props I have ever tried, really nice in the rough water, check out
"nigel takes a bath" on youtube
I know not a good way to promote a prop! ,had a go pro on the back of the
p21 with the yam drag in messy confused swell racing against Hydrostream in gale force 8++.

Tried a few other props ,big ear chopper ,tempest, high five, trophy ,laser 2 ,renegade and a cleaver from a mate of mine, scary as said already ,boat tried to hook many times in the rough, just couldnt find the sweet spot with it .The yam drag gives a lovely balance ,the trophy was a nice prop in the rough as well very forgiving.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies !! Different opinions, but in general a cleaver prop is worth a try, certainly in the rough. I usually only on flat waters, but I'll test anyhow.

I've experimented last year with engine height and ventplugs with my tempest plus. It seems that when the engine is too low it impacted the acceleration quite a bit !... when too high the prop grabbed air sometimes while cornering.... All logical, but I wonder if other props would perform better in this same 'higher' setup.

I think a cleaver could do better in these circumstances. I still need to be carefull though as I don't have a low water pick up.

Very curious to test this for the upcomming season

Anyone tried an E.T prop on a phantom?
Most boats seems to perform good with these style props.

Toffy, mind if i ask what you are looking to achieve? you are trying all diffetent prop with diffetent handling characteristics. No 2 rigs are the same so what works for one may not work on another. just my 2p.

@Renegade : just want to collect general info on how a cleaver works on a P21. Offcourse you need to test and try a prop, 'cause every rig is different. But I guess there should be kindoff a general idea on how cleavers work on P21's... There's no real goal, just the fun of testing and learning if this would work or not. This is the first prop besides my own, that I'm gonna test, so I'm curious.

@Mobil : I'd try a lighting ET (3blade) or PRO ET (4blade) anyday... but they cost 1500€ new. For now I'm not going to spend this money on a prop for hobby purposes...

Saw that your cruising area is zele, some people there run et props.
Offcourse it need to be the correct size and hub.
You can look @ ron hill proppellers, actually chad hill now. Ron retired but still active. Visited them past summer, they make all the props in house.
Also ET style props, but cheaper then mercury...
A perfect match of boat and prop can make some serious difference in performance and handling.

Just going off on a tangent here, I've been looking at the pro et.Four blades, ET lightning characteristics but with better rough water holding.has anyone tried one on a phantom?

Pro et

Bob, could I try it on my very slow p20.i need to get some sort of magic going coz Ross thinks he's got some sort of super/duppa powerhead turning up in the near future(I'm gonna whoop his ass so bad).would be good to see if that's the prop to do it with.but to buy one in cold blood seems extravagant
