Cougar 21 setup - Transom

Hello everyone...

I have a Cougar 21, 22” transom and we have a Mercury 225 Optiamx XL (25" shaft) that needs a home.

The boat will be used for complete recreational purposes and water-skiing. I understand my options are as follows:

1) Change shaft length - Advised best option

2) Mount on the lowest hole + jack plate to have between a c3-4 inch raise - Will increase stress on transom and increasing the height of the engine block.

3) Build up the existing transom – Expensive and still won’t overcome the lifting the height of the engine block.

I know 'Lars' had a P21 with a with 225 XL wondered if he encountered any problems. I appreciate the best option would be to change the shaft, but bearing in mind this is for a recreational use does anyone have any thoughts of running the Cougar with a jack plate should I be concerned about the transom??

If changing the shaft length is the only realistic option, does anyone have a 20" shaft for sale?? I assume I need a mid-section and bottom box.

Thanks in advance.”

Hi Rick - thanks for your reply, assume you're running an XL (25") on your rebuilt transom ?

Did you test the a jack plate setup before going the rebuild route ?

Thanks Rick.

Before I go the transom rebuild option which I really would like to avoid. Does anyone have an opinion on the lifter/jackplate option?

I was thinking of a manual lifter with a 2" set back

I would bother going down either route. An XL 25" really isn't the way to go. The COG will be higher than you would want it to be. We had a 25" on a Ring 21 and it was a nightmare...
