It almost look like they were made to have them fitted.

What is the difference between having them fitted horizontally or in line with the 'V' ???
Better on the V,on the horizontal only half the tab will be doing the job,the other stuck in fresh air.

As you know, 'facetious' is my middle name.

Leviathong has them in line with the deadrise, Swipes has them horizontal.

Good evening Jon, can I pick your brains please. Any theories of advise on drive height for my project, its easy with an outboard just drill a couple more holes and re bolt it, not quite so simple with stern drives.

I would like to get the best all round performance, but a bit worried about mounting it too high and struggling to get on the plane

I think you could get away with running pretty high to be honest. there are plenty of props available these days that have excellent bite. Also, being stepped, I doubt the boat requires much, if any bow lift, so you don't need to worry too much about the thrust line being too high.

Also, I suspect you're going to be somewhat restrained by transom height, so it may be that wherever you feel the top of your motor/transom assy can be, sets your max height. Have u measured from propshaft centreline to the top of the transom assy? Transom on the H225 doesn't look particularly tall.

Hi Jon and many thanks for your reply. Yes I have measured it, if I mount the outer transom plate level with the top of the transom the cavitation plate is 1in above the bottom of the hull. So with the 2in shorty it would give me an X height of minus 3in in total in theory(or in other words the prop shaft will be 3in higher than if I had a standard bottom and the cavitation plate level with bottom of the boat)

With the above measurements do you think I will get away with it ??

I think it definitely won't be too high. could go higher i'd say, but that will mean a carbuncle of a transom extension, so I guess +3" it is. Lucky you've got a shorty eh!

I am very lucky to have a shorty and very much in your dept, many thanks.

Just out of curiosity, props have change a lot since I last had a boat. How high could I go in theory???

I expect if you wanted to, you could get the propshaft above
the bottom.

Having a V6 Mercedes motor that high in the air might look odd.
