Evinrude Vindicator Electrics.

Hi
I have recently had an odd problem with the motor. I was doing some tinkering one day, and having just turned power to engine on (key was in turn-off position), went for a coffee. Came back, and noticed the flywheel was ROASTING! Completely drained the battery. Nothing obviously wrong so ignored it (charging not affected etc.)
Yesterday, same happened, just off East Head chichester harbour! Switched on power, tried to start engine, and smoke out of the top of the hood.
I can only assume the coils are fried by now..

Has anyone else had this problem? I thought the charging circuits was reverse protected by diodes?
200Hp, V6 '93 model

Not if the diodes have short circuited.
