Flo coat Gav? ;)

Hey

Today i did my boat with a layer of fibreglass resin colored in white. But it seems that it needs at least 2 or 3 layers . I thought you guys did it too with colored resin but it seems that people on this board(Gav) use gel coat?

What does flo coat contain? I know i will have to sand everything up again but now i want it to have good from the first time. I have a little bit of colored resin in gray for the splatters. Can i still use this if i'm going with the flo coat? How much kg would i need? It is for a fletcher 17Ft6 from the nose until transom? Which brush do i need?

i could be wrong but flo coat is just gel coat with a wax added so it drys properly.

I know it"s a gelcoat but dont know or there are additives in it.

Is it true that you only need one layer?

as far as i know you buy it ready mixed and you just add the hardener,do a search on google for a company in england called cfs,they sell it and have a good web site where you can get all the info you need,failling that gav or tony on this forum will point you in the right direction

It has wax gel coat resin and a little bit of magic! You have to get it right otherwise it all goes tits up! Especially hard if your going to put flec's in!

Flocoat is..........60% gelcoat, 36% resin, 4% styrene wax solution(+catalyst of course).

Resin alone will be too brittle, gelcoat alone will be too thick and show brushmarks etc.

apply with a laminating brush, while main base coat is still wet( keep catalyst content to a minimum ie 1%) flick your second and third colours into it.....its that simple. i use a harris broom head or just use your hand wit a glove on.

One layer is the only way to go, applying a second will end up a dissaster !

Send you a mail Gav. thx for your information. I've done one coat of resin only bit indeed it is too brite. I think if i go with resin i need 2 coats more and dont want it to sand two times again.

So i'm going to sand the resin and than apply that flo coat if i can find it here in Belgium How much kg do I need? I'll make a picture this evening but it looks terrible with that white resin. It also dont chines

Okey I called to a fibreglass shop today and they never heard about flo coat.
Than i told him the substances 60%gelcoat, 36% resin etc and they told me that it is called topcoat.

So is flocoat=topcoat? or not?

Here in Belgium we only speak about topcoat. Flo coat never heard of it. Well okay than i know which product that i have to order I'll keep ya folks updated

It sucks that i have to sand it all down again but that is the way that boats are. They ask so much time. But the advantage is that the underground? is +- white so i'll have to use less flocoat

it depends on what type of resin he's used, some resins like scott bader resin has a high wax content(low styrene emission) so would need sanding to key the surface ready for flocoat.

Yeh, I used the low styrene emission resin for my cabin but I've found a good wiping with thinners clears the wax from the surface. I've also just made sure I agitated the new flocoat thoroughly with the brush as I applied it and the wax re-dissolves into the styrene of the new resin.

How does that compare to epoxy + 2 part paints ?

Have you got more info about this Gav? How little is low? Can you see it on how much it shines? It is not that shiney.

I think i always do better by sanding it all down.

the less shiney the more waxey the surface will be, sand it down then flocoat it.
