Garmin Repairs

I've got a mates Garmin GPSmap 178c sounder unit that is no longer able to 'find itself'! I phoned Garmin but was told that they no longer carry out repairs to these units. The chap I spoke to was not exactly helpful tio say the least! Question is does anyone know where I could send it to at least see if it's worth repairing?
Cheers

Looks like you are having as much luck as I am trying to find someone to put a new transom in the Cougar! good luck, would it be worth trying to see if Garmin would do a trade up to a new model!

Hi mate,

Spoken to Blanchy, I was hoping he was going to get a quiet period then we could haggle a bit on the price.

Just going to have to bite the bullet and get it done for next season

All the best

I'd do it myself if it were mine.

We're gonna strengthen the saddle ourselves (well we'll make the plates and gussets and get them welded on!), I'm in 2 minds at the moment though whether to sack off the warranty and go with custom solid mounts, or just keep the stock ones until the warranty is up in a couple of years... If the stock ones wear out again they can be replaced on warranty again, but maybe the solid mounts will make for a more reliable and better handling package? Don't really want an injector or ECU buggering up though and having to fork out from my own pocket!

Wolfie did the transom in Adrenalin when John R had it, it was expensive but he did a great job.

Sorry for hijacking the thread Moose!

Apology accepted Paul. By the lack of replies to my question I guess the unit is dead. Annoying that there seems no route to at least try and fix it - I did take the back off and have a look, but none of my hammers were small enough to carry out the required 'adjustments'! looks like a new unit is required. On the up side I sell Garmin stuff at a really good price. On the down side I use my mates boat more than my own at the mo and the GPS packed up whilst I had it so it looks like I'll be getting a new GPS at a great price from_____________oh yes, myself!!!!!! Bummer.

I'm suprised to hear that Garmin can't help, as I've always found that they give excellent service.

They normally have a policy of offering a newer model for a broken unit, if that unit is no longer available, together with a nominal upgrade fee.

Thanks for pointing that out Tony - I'll give them another call on Monday and see if they are able to offer anything. The guy I spoke to must have got out the wrong side of the bed or something, he just didn't seem to want to help at all - no 'sorry but we consder that unit too old to service', or 'sorry we can't get the spares for those any more', - he simply said 'NO' and that was it. lets hope eh!

Over the years i've had problems with two Garmin units, well out of warranty. Both times i've pitched up at reception and asked for technical dept.

First time was given a replacement hand held unit.

Second time my old 182c was replaced with a new 550 for £98. Very happy with that.
I only needed a new plug on the back - but "we only do exchanges" so thought I was going to get a refurbed 182c, with a years warranty for my £98. This would have suited me as my screen was a bit tatty. However, they couldn't find a 182 to replace mine with as it's so old. I suggested that I didn't mind what they supplied as long as the screen resolution was the same, had an internal antenna and would take my English Channel chart card.

A new 550 was the only thing that they could find to match that.

Hydrostream - There is no jack on the back to take an external antenna but I could look at fitting one.

Daredevil - your not wrong there that might be the way to go.

Sorry for the delay replying but I've been away for a couple of days.

Cheers

Moose.
