GM 6.5 twin turbo diesel

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can find technical specifications on the GM 6.5 twin turbo diesel engines and the TRS drives ?

Thanks

The twin turbo was produced by Peninsular diesel at a claimed 400hp. I believe the Greek coastguard were using them.

Don't think they do that one anymore.

Here's their website.

http://www.peninsulardiesel.com/WP-PENTEST/?page_id=7

Merc haven't made the TRS Drive since 1987 as far as I know. It was the predecessor to the Bravo1, and used an inboard mounted Borg Warner hydraulic transmission.

Hi Jon, Thanks for the info but those engines look completely different. Here are a couple of videos I have uploaded. Aparently they are new in 2008 and 330hp. Hope this gives an idea. Pete

That's home made. the water cooled exhaust manifolds are definitely fabricated home grown jobs. Also, as it doesn't appear to be intercooled, I'd doubt very much if it would make 330hp.

Still definitely based on the same GM/AM General 6.5 litre block (as are mine)

Hi Jon,

This might sound a bit dumb but, are "charge coolers" the asme as intercoolers? I will have more information on them tonight and will post it here. They came out of something quite interesting but the guy who bought the boat, had his own engines.

Cheers

Pete

Yes, Chargecoolers, Intercoolers, Aftercoolers, all mean the same thing.

Ok, well they do have those. Would that make 330 more likely then?

I'll update when I know more

The engine in that video doesn't have any form of Intercooler that I can see. Outlet from turbo compressors 'Y' connect straight into the inlet manifold.

Also, it's interesting that there's no cooling water exiting the exhaust pipes. With load/revs, those exhaust rubbers will last but a few seconds.

Update

Hi Jon,

I have found out quite a lot more now. You were right about the name Penninsula, most of the engine parts are Penninsula. The engines were bought in parts (New), from America and Canada, assembled in the UK and set up to Penninsula specifications. The exhaust systems were designed specially and made to order in the UK. Aparently there are no other engines like this with this sort of turbo and exhaust systems on, as it was a one off design and it is unique.

As to water not coming out of the exhaust, the water pipe is going out of the manifolds back down to the bucket on the floor as he is recycling the cooling water because there is no water in the garage they are in.

So, I guess, all in all, these engines should be quite interesting.

Pete

Any suggestions as to the best exhaust outlets, from what you can see, in the videos. I will have all the parts from the old 260 mercs but donīt know if the through drive exhaust would be a good idea, or if they would match up with the TRS drives. I guess there must be some form of silencing if they are direct through the hull? Wouldnīt want the fishermen to fall off their boats, when I come into the harbour.

Will put the old 260īs on ebay, what does everyone think would be a fair price for them?

Thanks

Pete

Now listen ere gArf, they are all the same in that their job is to reduce the temperature of the charge air after if leaves the charger (Turbo or Super) where it had been heated by the compression process, so feck off. (chinscratcher)

Peter, if they don't have some form of intercooling, they won't make 330hp.

Definitely can't see any intercoolers in that pic!

Home blown

anything over about 7 psi in that set up and you will end up with pistons with rather large holes in the top ,do you now if the comp ratio has been lowered from the unblown setup.
