help!

went to put the boat down today and found the battery is dead, so i replaced it with one of 380 cranking amps, the trim works every now an then and when it doesnt it just clicks from the solenoid on the boat and when i go to turn it over the solenoid on the motor clicks but the starter does try to move slightly, i replaced an earth cable as that was looking a little tierd. i have checked an double checked all wires.
im thinking it could be the cranking amps too low? as the old battery was 470 cranking amps.
it was all running fine a week ago with everything working as it should.
any ideas?
cheers

check the voltage at the starter solenoid when someone is turning the key,
you could also try putting some jump leads directly onto the starter soleniod to eliminate the wiring but it sounds like a bad connection to me, id clean the battery terminals with some emory paper until they are shiney copper and try again

just tryd putting a scewdriver across the solenoid but didnt the much clicking or anything, but when i ran a live direct from the battery live to the solenoid it turned over slowly, would only turnover when the big and little lives on the solenoid were linked. starter seemed to stick in the flywheel too..
cheers

First thing I'd do is try a bigger battery (charge it just to make sure) directly to the solenoid and maybe different leads (battery leads can fray, break, come loose.) All kinds of funny things happen when lacking power so eliminate the power problem first or you could be chasing ghosts.

Hi sean,I did have one occasion when I had the starter just clicking but not turning over,I had the starter overhauled but it turned out to be a bad battery lead terminal-they are all soldered joints but even a newly soldered joint was making a bad connection, try eliminating leads by using jump leads and I'm sure you will find it,PS Battery was new 2 years ago with so called 5 year warranty(So it wasn't a cheap one)and was more than adequate to start boat so I don't think you will need a bigger battery,,I replaced nearly all the leads as well and the starter solenoid,Check isolator -corrosion can get in anywhere, was the boat OK on your first trip ?

I'm sure it will be a bad terminal, although I used all new terminals filled with hot molten solder and then plunged the new lead in and covered it with heat shrink,I think I should have reamed out the terminal first as it was a new joint that I had playing up ,you could not pull the lead out but it was making a bad connection,I would suggest cleaning all the connections every few months as it seams to be a common problem,I bet your chaffing at the bit now-I hope it goes OK when you finally get out in it,Nic
PS the isolator was new last year as well

It might be worth moving this inside the boat,I kept putting the cover on and forgetting to turn off isolator,I put it there as it allows you to turn power on and off with cover on,or fill it with grease,Been out yet?.Nic
