I think Rowg Wayve would be able to help and he is a top fellow, I am trying getting his phone number and hope to have it in 20 minutes tops and I will PM you.
This should be fairly easy to solve.

Unfortunately I haven´t been able to track Rowg waiv phone number, but his company is located at Saxon Wharf and is named New Wave Rib, I am still tracing his phone number and will PM you as soon as I have it.

There are 2 places in Southampton that do fix these things One is called Lavers and they are in West End and the other place is in Millbrook near the TA place.

If you want to bring it to our yard on Sunday then Jasper can have a look at it for you

Right o, did ask where his yard was but didnt get a reply. Found one company that said they could recondition it which will take a weekish. Another chap said he may have a second hand one for sale and will check to see if he has one at 5pm.

Its defo knackered, the cog flies up ok but when it gets to the top the spirally bit underneath the cog spins but the cog itself doesn't, hence the grinding noise. I think the top of the spirally bit has worn, there was also a fair few metal filings on the top of the starter.

Tried to manual start the engine but thats was a bit too much hard work, was turning but not quite popping into life!

O well guess Ill be of the water for a week or so, at least we had 3 good runs on her, just frustrating when you get a knew toy and it breaks innit.....lol

Simon you are not the first one to experiance this kind of problem on second hand boat.
I understand the fuel consumption as the boat is a bit heavy for this size of an engine.
At the time of manufacturing US Marine used smaller engine Bayliner does today, your boat would probably be powered by an 130 hp engine today.
So in near future it would be good sourcing larger engine.
Wish you all the best

If I recall right the 18 foot bowrider max hp. rating on the 1995 models where reckon to be around 120 hp (its quite few years I sold them over here).
With this engine size you will not generate many extra miles but you will have substantially less fuel consumption.

Apparently I have found out that the cog on starter should lock when it spins one way and move freely when you spin it the other way. So I have been told to replace it, dont spose anyone has a spare 9T one lying about anywhere?

Yeah, the small gear on the bendix(spiraly thing) often has a one-way clutch to avoid starter motor damage when the engine fires, it's a simple affair with needle rollers that jam in a little ramps in the bendix body, it shouldn't cost the earth
