It should be noted that whilst this is an american article we are not immune to ethanol and its effects in the UK although I believe it needs looking into separately.

Sorry I thought I had implied that - the levels at the moment aren't as serious as the amount they are putting into US fuel but certainly will have more of an impact than currently if they put more in - most modern cars should be immune but some types of GRP tanks may suffer and as pointed out in the article higher concentrations can potentially cause corrosion.

Oh i see. got ya. Some petrol stations are using higher ethanol amounts in lower grade fuel and even some fuel hoses break down with this. I just thought i would share the info as i have had some issues myself.

BP ultimate and Esso super don't have ethanol added in the uk,except for the south west of England(Devon & Cornwall) which has 5% added.

Any reason that Devon / Cornwall are different (boats in Devon!)

Also does this mean supermarkets buy fuel cheap on market and will be first to sell 10% then 15% ethanol?

If you are an oil burner I'm told that red diesel is less likely to have any nasties in it - ethanol also attracts water ..........

The problem there is they are starting to add biodiesel which has its own problems. Many boaters will have suffered from bug to some extent, but biodiesel can grow something like 1000 times the variety of bug 'standard' diesel can produce. We get a lot of visiting charter yachts from France, and last year saw a marked increase in the number of breakdowns through bug related issues. Investigation as to way suggests it's due to biodiesel being added to their fuel - SO BEWARE!!!
