inboard advice needed

a mate of mine is looking to buy a 18ft searay for wakeboarding / general boating and doesn`t know weather to go for an inboard or outboard is there much difference in fuel consuption between say

3.0ltr 135hp - 4.3ltr 190hp inboard

90hp - 135hp outboard

always had outboards any other benifits for an inboard in this size boat

other than less oil

Outboards use more fuel than inboards but inboards are heavy and are a pain to launch and recover single handed, also inboards take up extra room in cockpit.

Depends how you drive but outboard would use at least twice as much as an inboard. If you worry about fuel consumption you'd never launch your boat

Had the 3.0L in my old "Binliner" (20') and although was perfectley capable of pulling 2 tubes or a 3 man seadoo i would opt for the 4.3 ..... (easier to throw them out.. )

either way if you stick with the inboard you would get a "very" cheap day out .........

perhaps it was running a little on the "lean" side but i never used more than 40 quid on a "long day"

I,ve got a 5.0 in a 192 Captiva, it uses about half the fuel of my 2.5 Efi on a typical days use, but then it is alot slower.

You will get a better wake for the wakeboarding with an inboard as the boat would be heavier ! also i find the launch and recover is easier with the inboard as the boat wont blow around the trailer in the wind

fully trimmed in would only rev to about 32-3400 rpm which equalled about 32-35

although if you played with the trim you could get it to the redline (4600) ..... "just before you head skywards" and a speed of 45 (ish )

anyways it's sold now and i deffinatley "won't" be buying the 3 litre again

we did try and trim it out but rev counter and speedo weren`t working properly so might have been going a little faster was definitly reving to the full though thought it was going to blow up

is there any type of formula to work out what sort of power inboard vs outboard to get same sort of performance

ie what hp inboard would you put in a p21 to make it do 70mph

I would guess at 300hp, but a P21 is a bit narrow for the weight of a 300hp V8.

one of Cookees Mazda wankel turbos would be a nice way to go.

formula about - 35%

not going to do it to a p21 but alot of these type of boat searay bayliner etc have a 3.0ltr 130hp which i thought was gutless was alright bottom end pull away but not alot top end

if my mate decides on a inboard to save on fuel would advise at least 4.3ltr 190hp i don`t want to be waiting for him every where we go but then would the fuel consumption still be better than say a 115hp outboard probably be about the same performance

if he's gonna go to 6 pots why not go whole way and get "8" ! ....the bigger the better

after all if it's gonna be a dayboat and you want to go fast.. your wallet cannot be as tight as a "herrings arseho*e at forty fathoms" ....

failing that a few 5 gallon drums /
3 meters of garden hose / and a strong "SUCK" at a local tesco's or sainsburys C.P. the night before might help
