Burty
Direction of rotation needs to be the same as that supplied by the motor.
On our Yam I'm sure that was clockwise but could be wrong.

Burty, have your mittens got an 'R' on one, and a 'L' on the other?

I've 'rope started' V6's before, and am sure they run CW, you wrap the cord clockwise on the flywheel.
Also, in a normal RH gearbox, the pinion gear drives FWD into the fwd driven gear, this also says it's clockwise from above.
I'm now doubting myself, but i'm sure, well....sort of....eeerr..AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

phew!
As i said in my previous post, when you think of the gear arangement in a std RH box, it'd have to be a clockwise motah

Unless its a Merc S2000 unit as used in circuit!!! They ran opposite direction to XR2's. Supposed to be more efficient too!!!

They don't they both turn clockwise. If you turn the bendix by hand so it moves upto the flywheel it (the bendix) turns clockwise thus turning the flywheel anti-clockwise. So its easy to get it the wrong way round. Thinking about it as the startermotor starts moving anti-clockwise the bendix won't rotate imediately (thus effectively turning clockwise with respect to the motor shaft) and so moves upto meet the flywheel.
