Johnson 225 Hp- Reverse gear not working

Hi Guys,

I need a bit of help. I suscpect the the clutch dog and/or the reverse gear is worn on my Johnson 225hp V6 2 stroke, 1987.
The reverse gear will not engage, when I try to do so a grinding/ratchet noise occurs and the remote gear control lever is shaking quite a bit.

I have tried dismounting the shift cable from the lever on the motor, and then tried to engage the reverse gear directly on the motor. But with no luck.
The FWD gear works fine.

I have uploaded a couple of videos of the problem:

The problem has gradually become worse. First it started with a loud knocking noise when trying to get it in reverse gear (Gear jumping, I guess) . And now it is no longer possible to engage the reverse gear.

I realise that the engine is quite old, but it was compltely overhauled incl. lower unit by the previous owner somewhat 5 years ago.

I susspect the shift cables have not been properly adjusted at some point, so the clutch dog was not fully engaged. Furthermore the shift cables seems to be a bit worn. The black plastic piece at the end of the cable had some play in it. When the reverse gear was engaged, you could move this plastic piece back and forth quite a lot (1/4 - 1/2 inch)
I have replaced the cables and they are now OK (no play at the plastic piece) Although I have to adjust the barrel to the extreme in order to fit the cable onto the gear lever on the motor.

The shift height of the rod seems to be OK, I don´t have the special tool to measure it, but tried measuring by alternative means and it seems to be within limits.

Any ideas, is it the clucth dog??

Cheers
Michael
