Just want to pick the real brains on here

I know that curiosity killed the cat but cats don’t like water anyway. I was just wondering if there would be an interesting benefit from changing the heavy inboards, in the 36, to maybe triple outboards. Thinking along the lines of, Fuel consumption, power to weight and more internal space. Also interested in ideas about setting these engines aft of the transom.

I know many of you guys have some very clever ideas, please let me hear some of them.

Thanks in advance.

To be able to have any idea I would have a look round for a similar weight hull with clip ons and see how it goes and with how much HP - failing that get the boat weighed, work out the weight saving, comparative horse-powers and what performance you are looking for.

Hi Cookie,

Displacement is recorded as 4.445 Ton. I will get her weighed as soon as it´s possible. Obviously this includes both engines and fitted out as a leisure boat.

I thought there would have been more suggestions about this option, it might make an interesting boat?

That looks like the old 'Fly Navy' boat, it wasn't very quick. belonged to Nigel Williams.

All points taken. I was thinking of 3 outboards, not only 2. I wouldn´t think that 2 would produce that much power, for the size.

Another consideration is, the i / O drives are rated at 260hp, so any improvement on that, considering the added weight reduction, surely should make a difference.

Is this correct?

Triple Verado or the big V8 Yams could go well, but you're getting near a pair of inboard sort of price then maybe? Interesting costing exercise and you get an aft cabin where the engine room was!

This has been my thoughtd exactly, Kookee,

I would like to have a boat, bigger and more versatile than patriot. To take the other half for a weekend etc. Patriot will always be Patriot and on the trailer, ready for action. Just wanted to test the knowledge of those who know. I am going to look at a pair of big diesels, in the next few weeks. Came out od a 40ft pleasure boat. Can´t help thinking that the outboard choice would work well on 36ft. Given the weight reduction, the weight transfer to the transom, not in front of it and also I can then move the fuel tanks further aft.

Trouble is, I don´t know enough to make the final decision.

I would like to lose some weight (not personaly) and help whatever goes into her. There is a lot that can be reduced. The engine hatch alone weighs half a ton (figure of speach). Have also considered replacing the topsides, maybe something a little less "Fugly".

Any ideas are more than welcome.

Thanks again.

Pete

I think whatever you do you need to go into it with the certainty it's going to work - I'm sure everyone knows someone that thrown a lot of money into making a boat go slower than it started or at least fallen a long way short of the target - sometimes it's cheaper and easier to buy something done that meets all of your aspirations.

But where would the fun be in that! :-)

CG, is very importent to any boat , so i would not move weight around ( like fuel tanks ) i also would not consider outboards for a 36 foot cat.

Unless u wanna go 60 MPH max ??????

Upgrade the drives to IMCO or even XR's ( even # 4 /5 Speedmasters ) and stick some nice 650 + HP engines in it ,,,it will go beond 110MPH safe and u will have fun, if build trouble free even more fun !!!!!!!!!

If I'm right I think that might stretch the budget ever so slightly!

Spot on Cookee,

I have to save up for a month, to feed Patriot for an afternoon. PS, this one only has one hull, not a cat, but I guess the principle is similar. Looks like the way forward is the 2 big CAT diesels, that I hope to see next week some time. If not, Maybe strat an outboard mount to the transom and beg to borrow some outbourds, to give it a try???

Watch this space.....I think

Cheers everyone. Pete
