Knock, knock, knock
Went the engine slower and slower and slower it got too, then bleep, bleep, bleep. Bo**ocks, bo**ocks, bo**ocks i went, engine sounds like its knocked its ends out. Must of got an air lock in the oil system as plenty of oil in res, i'm assuming its the oil as it was a bleeping warning indicating a low oil warning, over heating of the power head is a continuas warning horn?
Well that was the end of my day out. So now looking to rebuild or replace engine Its a 200 Mariner pre 1990 engine so maybe not worth repairing? What would i be roughly looking at for a powerhead rebuild, any idea out of interest?
Maybe i should look for a newer engine second hand, i have seen a 200hp suzuki for reasonable money?
Or has anyone got a 200+hp motor they are thinking of selling? Your recomendations please.
Ta

Don't know of any off hand, but a 2.5 200 merc is a great motor, and will bolt down to your leg fine. In the future i'd run pre-mix if I were you though, there's just too much to go terminally wrong with the stock lube system!
Not sure if Pro-Rig is still selling his motor, it's my old 2.5 200 and he's spent a lot on it since, it's a lovely motor at a great price.

Im wondering if lifting the engine up 2 notches could of caused this as i seemed 2 get a bit of prop slip as i accelarated untill prop gripped, also a slight rooster tail when engine was trimmed out slightly, the anti vent plate is a good couple of inches above the bottom of the hull? Im pretty sure its not that though.

Yes i think pre mix will be the way to go, Ive not taken pump off yet to see if the plastic drive has gone, seems pointless now damage has been done.

That sucks! Never ran auto lube on anything I've owned!
I may have a 2.4 BP EFI for sale in the next couple of weeks, block is going for a sleeve this week and then being rebuilt.
If you're still looking then let me know,
cheers, Alan

Before you condem it take the heads off, it only takes half an hour. Quite often the bores will survive and you may find that you only need a piston or two. As it is you have nothing to lose

sounded to me more like the ends knocking than pistons. I recon its more than likely to be a complete powerhead rebuild if i go down that route, its a c20 year old engine anyway. I might as well get a good later engine if im going to spend that sort of money on a rebuild, and get a 2.5 rather than rebuild this which is proberbly a 2.4.
