Lathes

KPM didn't come through with either a price, or dimensions on the bobbins I wanted, despite claiming they were in stock. Business as usual then.

So I'll machine the fkkrs myself.
Does anyone have any first hand experience of this lathe?
Mebby chrimbo present for myself.

I know it's not top of the line, and won't have the precision of some of the old fashioned lathes, but it IS:
a) Big enough for the job.
b) "Just" about portable.
b) Can get a whole variety of steadies, tailstocks, etc from stock rather than scratching around on ebay for 100 year old used parts.

Thanks
M

Yeh, I've a pal (At the risk of sounding like Codprawn.) who has a real lathe but bought one of these for his holiday home in France. I've never used it but he reckons it's surprisingly good if you take it easy with the size of cut you use and allow for the backlash. He makes steam engines and he's pretty talented so I've no reason to doubt him. It's not a recommendation though cos I've no personal experience of it except seeing it in Machine Mart.

If you only want bobbins and other small bits try a CL250M Variable Speed Lathe

Yep we got one of them.
They are ok, bit of a pain in some respects, the saddle has no release so you have to wind it back and forth all the time, slider adjustment is a bit clunky due to the use of course threads, the drive switch over between chuck and mill slips out after a while a cable tie sorts that out, you will have to modify the quill lock on the mill before you break it, z axis (up and down) is in whole mm so accurate depth setting is real hard, but on the whole not a bad machine for the money.
Alternatively send me your dimensions and I will knock you some up on ours.
What material?

I think he wants hundreds....

They are the same bobbin thingy that fits the V24 windscreen to the body of the boat. They are a mushroom shaped nut basically, with a thread ( duh ) in the middle and two holes for a spanner thingy on the outer edge. After making two or three, you will do your head in.

A cnc job if there ever was one!

Matt
Many years ago i served my time on machines, if you have 3 ph go for a 2nd hand Dean Smith or a wee Colchester, these machines last forever and as long as they have not been abused are not bad for cutting tapers after a lot of use,
Best of all are bought very cheap from Ebay some times for the price of the scrap matal.
If you need any tooling let me know.

Thanks for the kind words Chris.

I wasn't ignoring your post, but hadn't got round to replying. I was ignoring your call. Boatmad people phone me for 1 of 3 reasons:
a) To complain I've deleted a thread
b) To complain I've not deleted a thread.
c) To borrow something.

Which one were you?

Anyway, you & chaos don't count as boatmad people. Our mutual love goes far deeper than that.
