Manual lift
Am thinking of getting myself a manual jack plate- I'd like to have a play with moving the engine up a little but am already on the bottom hole on the top bracket and don't fancy having the transom built up.
Can anyone recommend a manual lift? I've got a 200 ho on a phantom 20 and find it gets very Chine happy when I trim out and floor it but am only getting 69 flat out. I can get the same speed but less chiming if I'm not flooring it completely.
Also, given what I've read I'm thinking I should get the minimum setback possible to avoid changing the bow lift.
I'm racing the boat in the Guernsey basics but dont have any experience of setting up a boat so am just going from what I get told and read on here.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - am not afraid to have a play and see what works for me .
Thanks guys
john

There's one company that make a jack which is only about 2" thick, that would be ideal. I'll see if i can find it but I'm sure someone on here will beat me to it!
Where is the bullet of your gearbox in relation to the bottom of the boat at the moment?
What prop are you running? This can make a huge difference!
Trim tabs may also be worth considering. Edd has some on his P20 with a 200 opti and they make a world of difference, no chining at all with them dipped just slightly, but all over the place without them. Also had the same effect on my old ring.
Just my 2p

Hi John,
I fitted a set of twin ram tabs to Top Gun and they worked so well i took the bow tank out.
Best prop i have found was spinnelli/Hoss 14x24 spoonbill, this gives my boat bow lift but yours looks light so its just a case of try out what you can.

Cheers guys!
Yrs It's got a low water pickup- so should be okay to give a bit of a lift!
not sure of how far below the bottom of the hull the engine sits- she's still in the water at the mo though so will check when I get her out.
I think it's quite low- it'd be nice to be able to lift her up a bit and see what difference it makes! Have never had cavitation out the hole or under accelerTion.
Hadn't thought about trim tabs- interesting! Cheers!!!!!
Let me know if you remember the name- cheers larby

Just my 15p worth. I found that adding the trim tabs gave moch more control. I am not racing, just fast pleasure. I still get 65 with a heavy setup, in a P21 with a standard Mariner 200. Engine not high enough to need low water pickups. Was using a Yam race prop and found lots of cavitation, But was fast. Now using a Throphy and it works well in all fields, hole shot, speed and control.
Hope this can help in some way.
Pete

Trim Tabs
Cheers Guys!
MMmmm- thinking trim tabs might be the next thing on my list - Steve - do you have the Bennett MT12s ?
These seem to be best suited from the research i've done but are only recommended up to 60 - anyone got any experience of using these or can recommend any others?
Has anyone tried interceptors?
Thanks
John

Hi John,
It is the twin ram Bennett that I have, cant tell you the exact model though.
After many races and the boat spending a great deal of time airborn they are still fine.
I also rigged a pair of 33c cables to the dash as tab indicators which were a good quick ref guide as to where they were.
P20- following sea - tabs down= not good
When I ran the EFI Offshore speeds were high 70's
As long as they are fitted correctly you should be fine
It was great to see your boat coming on compared to last season, good luck with the rest
Steve

Cheers guys
So I've had a look- the bullet of my gearbox is a good 4 inches below the bottom of the v so given what I've read on here it sounds like it could come up a couple of inches - thinking I may get a manual lift to have a play and see what the effect is...
3 concerns though...
1. I'm a little worried raising the center of gravity may be a bad thing given the pretty lairy chining I'm getting above 65 in chop
2. Doesn't it put a lot of additional strain on the transom using a lifter?
3. Arent they pretty heavy?
In the meantime - my navigator has asked me to concentrate on getting stability before more speed for the moment (chicken!!!) so I have ordered some ST16s - hopefully will get them fitted in time to practice and get to grips with them prior to the next race.
What do you do with trim tabs when cornering?

Hi John,
Tabs in corners- P20- bad idea keep them tucked up out of the way, also in a following sea.
Make sure when you fit them to ensure fully retracted they have at least a 5 degree angle upward.
Is your boat being affected by torque steer, is your motor slap bang in the middle of the transom!
It takes a while to set a boat up properly, you are deffo on the right track so far the boat is looking much better already.
Good luck with the rest
Steve
