How about Renault and BMW, back in the turbo F1 days, they both built 1.5litre motors that for qualifying produced 1200+ hp, but like the Honda, or perhaps the Skyline motor, don't really have an application in the marine world.

Or how about a Keith Black Chevy Drag motor, 5000hp ish!

The japs certainly like to hot up their road cars, but we're getting way off topic here, for a reliable powerful, and lightweight alternative to the current line of Gasoline pleasure boat engines, what do you see as the number one contender then?

Commercially, Yamaha are not over interested in the marine industry, that is apparent by the fact that they use other manufacturers powerheads in their outboards. If they wanted they could build there own engine for marine use but the returns just simply dont stack up. However through business links and associations they are more then willing to have their logo splashed over someone elses engine earning them a few Yen and some more advertising too.

America is the largest engine manufacturer and as such build high volume for low cost. This is the only reason people around the world use their products cos their cheap and plentiful.

Dont get me wrong, they are nice engines, just lazy and old hat.

It will be interesting to see what engines start being put in boats in the future once the price of oil extinguishes the manufacture of these dinosaurs. Im sure their will come a time when it becomes financially rewarding for someone to manufacture an alternative and become the sole marine supplier.

The same as yours, or was, they no longer market Gas sterndrives.

I wasn't aware that Yamaha didn't make their own OB powerheads!

Also, based on your comment re: commercial worth, if this is so, why don't Yamaha buy in the Bravo and re-badge it, instead of building that fkkn dreadfull hydrodrive?

You sound surprised that you, the God of Motorboating wasnt informed by Mr Sakamoto himself.

Most of their current stuff is all their own handywork but in the early days they used other manufacturers powerheads whilst testing the Market.

Like i said before, Yamaha are not really interested in the world marine stage at present, however they do like to supply their products to the home market in Japan.

I openly admit that i dont know anything about the Hydrodrive. But i will look into it now i know about it.

Another small factoid: Did you know that Yamaha Build big boats out of composite and GRP? not just inflatables.
