Mariner 60 Impelor change/steering

Hi I'm trying to help my friend who has a very old (about 1978) pre power trim outboard and he's trying to change the water impelor, has removed all the visable nuts and the gearbox drops about 3mm but does not seem to want to move any further it seems to be sticking at the front,is there anything to release on the gear rod as that's at the front or does it just need a bit more force,Also the steeing had loads of play not helped by the main bolt being loose but the arm from the motor also has some movement as if its rubber mouted in the leg-any thoughts.Any help appreciated.Nic

I had an old engine with same problem, trick was to put it in reverse and it came right off Dunno if it applies to that model though.. Good luck

Well it's been a while since I pulled a late 70s Mariner apart but you could find that if you open up the water intakes you will find a connector for the gear shift. Or a small rubber hose somewhere towards the front. Or a connector for the gear shift somewhere else if you have a look around.
