Mariner Late 1980's outboard.

I Have just bought a Mariner 6hp 2 stroke. I estimate its late 80's early 90's. (red and orange lined cowling). I notice that lower units and all casings are identical to the 10 and 15 hp 2stroke motors. I also notice that the engine is quite big for 6hp. A friend recommended its basically a 15hp engine with a smaller carb.

Anybody know if this is true? Any help on how (if possible) to upgrade would be sincerely helpful.

Also if upgradable are the gears strong enough for a 10 or 15hp mod. ?

Cheers,
Rob.

No, the 6 and 8 h.p are identical- 210cc.
The 9.9, magnum 10 and 15 are bigger-262cc.
You can upgrade your motor to 8 h.p.

In the early 90's the 9.9 was 210cc, in the mid 90's he grow to 262cc.
The 15 marathon is simular to yamaha.

Excellen Tremlett 15!!!! Thanks for taking the time to post that. It is very helpful indeed. If it goes up to 9.9 then i will buy a carb. for it. I think though i will go to my local mariner dealer and ask him. I also need an engine tray.

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks also schim,

Rob.
