merc v175 cooling system / temp sender

Hi

I have baught a rib with a merc v175 (v6) 1995.

Today i took it for a good spin and noticed the temperature guage showing hot.

I am questioning the accuracy of the guage and/sender as at first it showed cold all day, i then found a loose connection and it jumped to hot.

I have a manual but i cannot find any where a diagram of the cooling circuit.

Where is the tempertaure sensor located and is there any way of testing this?

Does this engine have a thermostat and where would it be located?

The tell tale is warm to hot - but not scalding hot.

When i stopped and idled the guage slowly dropped to cold.

Can any one offer any assistance?

Thanks

sender is in the head, im guessing but i would assume one side will be the overheat light and the other be the sender unit. both units will be between the top 2 spark plugs
