Mercruiser 5.0l sediment in cylinder?

Hi All

I have moved on to bigger things, bought a boat without testing the engine as i am converting to a diesel this winter - but just wanted to have a week with the v8 before!

It turns out the engine was seized, and after pulling the plugs, there was one cylinder that is full of crud! its like sand? this engine has been sitting for over 5 years, but its packed in!

Has anyone come across this problem, and is there a 'cheap fix' rather than pulling the head off? i have tried to break it loose and blow it out with small amounts of success..

Its the port on the left on the picture.... honestly iv seen dome weird things but this tops it so far..!

thanks!

Cheap fix - NO WAY. that needs a full strip-down and rebuild. That will be in a BAD way. I'd possibly start looking for another block. You're going to have to check everything. That will most likely turn out to be a pile of scrap if its been left like that for so long.

Hi Mate, turns out you are 100% correct. its pretty much scrap, I'll probably rebuild it and sell on at some point. After taking the heads off it was clear that a valve was left open on this port, and that sediment and other crap from the exhaust was allowed to go in and clog the whole thing up - to the point that the piston no longer looks like a piston!!

Thanks anyway, i am now in need of a 200hp diesel engine. Most peps rate the isuzu (well - Yanmar but comes from the same factory) 3.1. Ill Stick a wanted in the trading section!

Cheers
Will

just had the piston out and suprisingly, the bore is fine and the whole engine is like new (no wear on lifters/cam, bores are clean, pistons and rings in very good shape.. well apart from one!)

Now.. Got to find a replacement piston and rod, Does anyone know where i can get one from in a small amount of time?

tried the usuals like coastal rides, keypart ect..
Thanks
Will

Hmm. Cant help but feel you should really renew all rings and lightly hone the bores to bring them back into spec. Unless your trying to go for a real cheap rebuild.

Have you established why water got in, in the first place?

Yeh, no problem, don't suppose you know the serial number of the motor?

To Be fair I would prefer to buy a single piston as the other pistons are in great condition. s/n is 0D807579. pretty sure that its all std size.

Piston is £112.86
rod is £137.17

Less 10% BM discount, plus vat......

None in stock at Barrus, waiting to here if Belgium has any.
