Mercury 2.4 info needed!

Hi guys,

Recently purchased this 2.4 175hp carbed merc lump, believed to be around a 77 model, could anyone give me abit more info in relation to transferable parts from the later models? XR2/ EFI etc is this still classed as an XR2 or too early? Sorry if the questions sound daft but these are new to me!

Kind regards

look's like a very early V6 Merc. Could be a 2.0lt steel bore(1976/77 or 2.4lt 1978 chrome bore motor. It has a one piece race cowling. The motor has the very early cylinder head bolt pattern. The motor also has old 2 hydro ram trim with pre 80,s bolt pattern & not the more common stepped pattern we all use. Not much in common with later 1984yr 0n motors etc.

Is there a true way I can identify what I have? Would be nice to know for certain if it’s a 2.0 or 2.4, is it a case of taking a head off?

If you mean the serial number on the top etched into the core plug... it’s been replaced with a water feed... this was were the initial problem started! There’s ‘79714’ on the heads but I can’t see anything else on the motor
