Need info on Evinrude 235hp V6

Hi guys !

As you know I'm gonna take a look at that Bernico 21ft this weekend. A wanna be prepared to ask questions about the engine.
  • How old can it be ? In other words : in which years did Evinrude construct its 235 V6 engines ? Gonna check for serial/mod nr off course. But seller told me it should be a '92 model because the hull is that age... I think that's a bit 'young', as an internet search learns me construction years run from '80 till '85. But I'm not sure...
  • There should be a serial/model nr tag, probably on top of the midsection.
    But where can I find a serial/model nr somewhere on the engine block itself ?
    Seller claims this engine block was rebuilt and tuned upto 300hp in 2002 and has only 50h on it. I want to compare the serial/modelnr of the rebuilt invoice with one on the engine block...

Also any other info on this engine is appreciated : WOT, gph, reliability, known defects,...

Toffy, I have an Evinrude/Johnson manual which covers a number of engines and part of the title is, '48 - 235 HP - 1973 -1990' which kinda implies that the 235 ceased production before 1990. The last date referred to for the ignition timing data is 1985 and the first date is 1977 to that would look as though the engine producion run was from 1977 - 1985.

To check the year, you need to find the model number not the serial number. There is a code which uses the word INTRODUCES to identify the year. I'll try and explain it below. The letters represent numbers.

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

If, say, the model number was J235STLCUR then the year is identified by the letter positions C & U.

So, J 2 3 5 S T L|C U|R
. = J 2 3 5 S T L|8 7 |R
. = 1987.

This system started from 1981.

The sticker on my motor was on the side of the mounting saddle. You can see something similar on the picture you posted of the white engine. It's a long time since I owned one but I have a recollection that the number was also stamped into the block but I could be mistaken on this.

I still have an unused lower unit for a Johnson 175 which I kept as a spare. From memory, the ratio is about 1:1.8 and I believe the same unit was used on the 235. If this proves to be any use to you, we can work something out. It has laid under my bench in it's packaging for at least 10 years but it seemed too valuable just to throw away.

from memory 235 finihed mid 80's

Great info guys !

1977 - 1985 sounds right.
That modelnr system also works for my current engine : Evinrude 140hp modelnr : BE 140 T LENS => EN = '92 , which is correct !
Maybe that unused lower unit can be usefull to me in the future. But first I need to hear the engine running and buy this boat off course... I know the lower unit strength of my 140hp enginemodel are considered a weak point, maybe that's also the case on the 235 Ev model ??? Does anyone know weak points (except that it's old ) on this engine ?

Can anyone confirm IF and WHERE the modelnr is stamped into the engineblock ? This is important to me, as I wanna be sure to buy that rebuilt engineblock.
Gonna check my own engineblock if it has a modelnr stamped in it...

The engine serial number is stamped on a frost plug on the top left port bank of the engine. last years of a 235hp was 1983, the 235 run on 1"3/8 carbs as opposed to standard V6 engines, they are an old engine, drink fuel and hp was way overated. Over to you.

I'll check that serial number stamp ! Thanks for the location info. Needed that badly
Would YOU buy that engine if it turns out to have good compression, cold start and hose testrun are fine, and paperwork (invoices) on the 2002 rebuilt and tuning by Nico Bertels are genuine ?

Boat+engine+trailer would cost me 8000€.
It's for recreational use in summertime only.

Don't know what a frost plug is (having some trouble with the English lingo, or I simply don't know what it is technically ?), but I found a number stamped into the engine block. Looking towards the front of the boat : this number was on the block on the right side, where the carbs meet the block. You can see the throttle lever in the detailed picture.
I'm giving you the rightside and detailed rightside engine picture with the number....
Is this number I found of any use ? Can I track down the engine type with it ???

It looks very much the same as my current '92 Evinrude V4 140hp 90° Loop V powerhead. That's for sure.

For me it's a looper to. Above the section where "V6" is written in the block there is a round silver thing with a number stamped in it. Thats what you need. Although this is how they did it with the V4 dont know if it is the same for the V6.
