My Volvo drive uses 6 studs if that's any help. It doesn't mean there were never any which used 8, of course.

Having spent the last couple of days getting pretty intimate with a Volvo hole, I reckon that's a BMW!

SECOND question
is there any way of fitting a "different" drive in in those holes (say mercruiser) without replacing the transom ? (adaptor plate ?)
or another that has a big enough "footprint" to cover the (confirmed) BMW holes ?
i have a number of varying drives/engines available but no BMW at the right price, so looking for other possible alternatives

Merc do a Volvo to Merc adaptor plate, and so does Mike Bellamy/Lansing Marine who may well do a BMW one as well!
The cheapest/easiest way, but not the prettiest is to bolt/laminate a 2" square over the hole and re cut for drive of your choice, sort of like a 2" standoff box!
Nothing else has a hole as big as a BMW! Yamaha and SX style Volvo both fit the Merc Hole!

I do have access to CNC & "water jet" cutting , Would it be feasable to use perhaps 3/4 or 1" Aluminium plate ( even if i had to enlarge the existing holes a little) to construct an adaptor ring ?

The transom thickness needs to be 1.75"-2.25" (if my memory serves me right) as the two halves of the transom assy (inner & outer castings) have the drive shaft going through them at 12 degrees, a transom outide these dimensions will put the alignment out.
So your ali plate will work, as long as you pack the thickness up to 2" with ply, which would also give a little compression when the thing is tightened up, which would be a good thing.

cheers jon for confirming this
it's a good project , definatley worth saving, although it's been robbed "slightly" over the past 18 months whilst in storage the majority is still intact
"Mrs Foolish" agree's it's cheap at £500.00 ( well nearly )

WHAT HOLES ARE THESE
IT TAKES AN OLDUN TO IDENTIFY SOME OF THE OLD CRAP THAT USED TO BE AROUND IN MY EARLY YEARS. THEY ARE OMC 800 OR EARLIER SERIES, THE TYPE WHERE FOR POWER THE ENGINE WAS RAISED ON THE FRONT BY ELECTRIC MOTOR AND PIVOTED ON THE TRANSOM WITH A RATHER LARGE NEOPRENE GASKET SCREWED TO THE TRANSOM AND HELD ONTO THE ENGINE WITH A HUGE HOSE CLIP. SOME HAD ELETRONIC SHIFTING OTHERS HAD A TWIN CABLE SYSTEM, ALL RATHER ADVANCED FOR THEIR YEAR BUT CRAP ALL THE SAME.

Now I'm confused! are they BMW, or are they early OMC?

I remember the old OMC you're talking about Bill, drive upper looked like an old dustbin with the washing machine bellows to the transom, and for tilt (as apposed to trim) it had that awful quadrant gear and knuckle drive, not unlike the one used on outboard tillers for the throttle linkage when folding the tiller handle up. (on old motors)

NOW I'M CONFUSED
THESE ARE NOT BMW AS BMW VERY SIMULAR TO VOLVO, THE ONLY CUTOUTS I'VE COME ACROSS THAT ARE MORE SQUARE THAN OBLONG ARE THE DREADED OMC 800 SERIES, AND AS YOU CORRECTLY SAY HAVE THAT AWFULL KNUCKLE DRIVE AND ELECTRIC LIFT ON THE EXPOSED RACK AND PINION QUADRANT.
THE BEST THING ABOUT THE 800 SERIES IS THERE AINT MANY OUT THERE NOW.

"THE OLD CRAP THAT USED TO BE AROUND IN MY EARLY YEARS"
Just spoke to the owner again and he said he removed a pair of BMW 220's (last of ) and has the origional engine numbers - would this help ? (will post later )
Does anyone have any measurements of the BMW and/or the OMC 800 series that might confim this ?
