If new, I'd say a 200 or 225XS

If used, a 225 promax

new engine

Thanks guys
I was looking at one of these mercury xs250 (boats and out boards) or an evinrude 250 ho (sold by someone on here ) both new engines but i take it they are to big for my p20

Not sure about my xr2 as its not been in the water for many a year just deciding whether to rebuild or just buy new. I know rebuild is a lot cheaper but technology moves on and its 16 years old, fantastic engine tho and never let me down

once again guys thanks for your help

You'd be fine with either of those! I think people are trying to come up with something that'd be about the same weight & speed as your xr2. You'd have a bit more of both with the 250's, but people put 300's, 280's and even more on the back of P20's, so a 250 will be fine.

depends on what you want out of it, i am an evinrude etec fan, but i think the big 3.2 mercs give more performance out the box.
on the other hand the 250 ho are doing well in the ski racing at the moment as the are very torquey motors. i would get in touch with some of those guys for some input.
etec fuel economy is very good too.

Its not the HP thats the problem anymore for the transoms, its the weight of these new motors.

Uh huh! Talk to the ski racers. From what I have heard many a transom ends up damaged. Pretty straight forward to reinforce though with tie bar assembly.

the new 300xs / 250ho's will be too big for a P20 its not the power but the size of prop you would have to spin to keep the revs down. nothing wrong with a 260 or 280 though however these are race engines and need rebuilding regulary.

Hutchy ran his 300 xs's in on a very lightweight P20 and it coped ok, it wouldn't do more than 90 mph though. Before anyone comments about the speed this is the Phantom 20 the Terminator that he did 97.64 mph on Coniston with a modified 2.5 efi .

Roofer, Hutchy is not your average driver tho!!

Not sure I would want to drive a P20 with such a big prop.

The 300xs would be a great engine for a P20 if you converted it to a 15" mid section from MAD efi.

The older 300x runs ok on the P20 with a 15" mid section, The Mutz nuts on here have that set up on their P20.

What is the weight like on these newer ones then? Say compared to a 200 opti or promax? There's a couple of Phantoms over here running newer 'rudes. I knew they were heavier but didn't realise they were that bad! Would a bit of reinforcing down to the stringers strengthen things up enough?
I'm just concerned that a 150 may seem a touch wet compared to an xr2? What about a 200HO then?
The 200 opti's are good motors too, or a 2.5 200 carb motor as previously suggested, I think they're great!
The other guys on here do know far, far more than me though, so I'd take their advice!

they are about 50 to 75 kgs heavier but its the low revs thats the problem
ideally on a P20 you don't want to spin a prop much bigger than a 24 as they are quite a narrow boat and any bigger prop and it trys to tip the boat over with the torque. to go 85mph with the newer xs's and ho's you'd be up around a 28" prop

I like the way you say only 90!!!
Have you ever driven a P20 at 90mph? and we are not talking searay speedo's either!

Burty had 89.6mph from his P20 with around 350hp (2.5efi) and I think that he would agree that was fast enough in a P20.

It takes a very good driver with balls to hang onto it at that speed.

Hi Burty,

I tried a 26 cleaver on my P20 with a 2.4EFI, although that is a stern lift prop out of the hole and top speed was pretty good.
The problem came when the boat left the water, on re-entry I think the prop stopped where it was and the boat twisted over violently which was unexpected .
A friend once said "its times like that you realise adrenaline is brown"
