So, from what we can tell, removing the oil injection will save a fair bit of weight and mean one less system to fail.

The only minor downside I can see is that by providing a fixed oil/fuel ratio at say, 40-1 for all of the time, you'll have a much more smokey motor at idle with possible risk of plug fouling if left idling or used at low RPM for extended periods.

Solution? Don't let the RPM's drop!

... oh, and take a couple of sets of spare plugs with you.

My main concern is the possible failure of the pump drive. It will give me more room under the splash well, maybe for a new tank, if stern weight does help performance.

I don't plan lengthy times at idle, apart from getting out of and back into the harbour.

Point taken and yes, spare plugs.

It should be fine dude. I don't know a lot about boat engines, but I've had several race 2-stroke motorbikes in the past and I never, never trusted Yamaha's 'Autolube' system on the RDLC engines. If it's that reliable then why don't they put it on the TZ race motors? Exactly. Adds weight and saps power too.

I've even used this system on the road before now with these engines and they worked pretty well. I found that if it did start to get a bit 'spluttery' then pulling in the clutch and revving it a bit would usually clear it.

I used to run Castrol R40 - for the smell as much as anything else! But I wouldn't advocate that on a modern motor. There are far better synthetic based oils which are much less prone to ring gumming (NOT an interesting sexual practice to try at home - sorry JBD. ) and also less prone to varnish and nasty deposits than the old castor oil based lubricants.

Don't smell as nice though....
