Old Style Cast XR2 Pistons

Well one of my friends pestered me into looking at his mates XR2 which "was running a bit funny". I don't normally do this but I do about 4 race engines a year for him so said I'd take a look. I'm going to ring his mate and tell him to buy a lottery ticket on Friday. I would say it's been a few revolutions from making a bit for freedom out the side. So advice for anybody with an XR2 which still has the old cast pistons in is to change them for the new ART forged items. The skirt on the old piston cracks as you can just see in the photo. I've also never had the circlip fall out on the new style retaining ring and we see well over 8000 rpm. Finally if its not running right SWITCH IT OFF and investigate it's far cheaper in the long run than a new block, luckily this can be fixed with a liner.

"If its not running right switch it off and investigate" - wish I had done that before our old XR2 gearbox disintegrated!!
