Phantom Set up query
I had a Phantom 20 with XR2 and 5 inch set back lifter, with this boat you could trim out and get the boat running on the pad and if you trimmed out to much it would porpoise until you trimmed it in.I had a chance yesterday to try my Phantom 19 in flat water and with the same set up, bar a 15inch leg, both boats running the gearbox point 1 inch below hull bottom, With this boat if you trim out the boat it still feels down in the water and if you trim out further all you end up with is a big rooster and no porpoiseing at all, Many people have said that the boat seems to run down in the water although this is quite stable its not going to be the fastest set up. Any thoughts on this apreciated,Nic
PS I normally run it with a 24 chopper but yesterday tried a 23 Lazer 2 and it felt the same.All the weight is at the back of the boat.

Which gearbox are you running - Sportmaster or CLE? Historically setback brackets have never been a great success on Phantoms. Did the 19 have a 20" leg on? What speeds were you running with what gearing?
It doesn't matter what "people" say it looks like it's running if you're achieving good speeds for your setup.

I'm by no means an expert on Phantoms but I have noticed that every 19 I've seen runs extremely flat. I think this boat was developed to be very stable for a very specific purpose and so remains relatively quick even though it does not follow conventional bow up thinking. I know of 2 with in excess of 280hp so you would think it would be easy to them to fly but speaking to a few owners even high rake qss notorious for lifting the bow high fail to get significant bow lift.

Hi it was a 20 inch on the P19 when I got it(I did not run it like this as the tunner was badley corroded) and had the opportunity to change to a 15 inch,I did this mostly because the P20 tended to chine walk and I thought dropping the powerhead 5 inches would help to eliminate this on P19 which it does as the boat feels very stable (it already had the transom cut down). I put the lifter on to help launching in WSM on the beech and also it allows me to tilt the motor without the steering catching on the transom. With the 23 Lazer it was pulling 60ish mph at 6,000 revs,trimming it out only resulted in a big rooster and 7,000 revs but not much faster perhaps 65mph,I think its a 1.87:1 gearbox .I very much like the stability but think I will get more speed with it out of the water, saying that we don't very often get the flat sea.Nic

I do like the stability of the P19 the P20 was quite exciting(Handfull) when trimmed out.I just feel the P19 would quite a bit quicker with it up out of the water.Thanks for your comments/info.Nic

If your trimming out and its just making a big rooster it sounds like the p19 is just a particularly heavy boat.
Also we changed the 300 promax from a 20" to a 15" mid and it made a huge difference to pitch stability. Even on Rich's p25 the 20" midsection made it more unstable. Weight high up is really bad for handling.

In fairness I did not push it for top speed I was mostly commenting on the rooster when trimmed out as apposed to lifting the bow which is completely different to the P20,I probably could of got more speed with it trimmed in a bit.From memory the 20 had a wider pad area but I've never compared the two side by side,Nic

you might find if you tuck it in a bit and hold it flat out it will gain the speed (70 +) then trim it out, also how worked is your prop ? if its thinned thats not helping, try a raker loads of bow lift.

Both props I have used are thinned, is the characteristics I described ie;when trimmed out= lack of bow lift, big rooster and no purposing normal on a P19 ?.Nic

Did you try raising the lifter at all? Be careful of water pressure!

I would try raising the lifter little by little and experiment with the trim at every height setting, I think you will see some very different result - but not without a water pressure gauge!
