I'd be a bit concerned about 100psi, I think it should be 120/130 when new

I'd heard that they were supposed to be around 120psi, but I wasn't sure whether that was for the XR2 or for the 'garden variety' engines like this one. I just thought that the fact that the owner had bothered to get stuff like this checked in the first place was a good sign in itself. That and the fact that he obviously cared about the boat enough to keep it cleaned, polished, serviced and on a clean trailer also seemed to bode well. It was also about the only one I've seen still in original gelcoat!

I have no previous experience to base it on, so I went by the same rules as I used to when shopping for two-stroke motorbikes. It started and ran well enough, there seemed to be no untoward rumblings from the crank, etc. no excessive smoke (Certainly it ran far smoother and quieter than any other one I'd looked at in my price range.)

I'm sure that as I get to grips with working on it I'll find bits that aren't very nice, it is about 14 years old, after all. But this was the reason I bought an old one fairly cheaply rather than blow a wad of cash on a possible expensive dog. It's all a steep learning curve for me! I expect to find niggles here and there and after all, if I wanted a new one then there are plenty of places that will happily sell me a new one - at a price I can't afford! But I think on balance I've got a tidy enough introduction to boating for the price of an old Mondeo.

Time will tell though!

change the steering to either dual cable or hydraulic before you do anything if your single cable goes at 55+ its going to be a shitter

Sounds alarming! Does that happen often then? Not too much of a job to change to twin or hydraulic by the look of things. Hmm. Will investigate.

Good advice chaps. Hydraulic it is.

Mailspeed Marine do a set-up designed for single helm positions with 6m of hose and rated for up to 300hp. Should do the trick. I'll call them during the week. Doesn't look like too much of a job to fit it. Unless anyone can recommend a better set-up and/or supplier?

Got an insurance quote of £179.00 off MarineSafe too, so that sounds reasonable. Certainly a lot less than I used to pay for my bike. I just need to find the engine number for them now so I have theft cover. The boat is still with the last owner at the moment until he can deliver it, so I'll ask him for the number - I hope he can find it!

Other than the redundancy issue the main advantage twin cable has over single cable is that you can adjust one cable against the other so that one cable is in constant compression and the other is in constant tension. This overcomes any give in the cables and any wear/play in the helm gears. With single cable you can't do this so the engine is free to wag around on the back of the boat which at speed and when trimmed out will cause the boat to chine walk all over the shop. A decent hydraulic setup if properly installed and bled should have very little play also and will be lighter than a twin cable setup.

Solid bushes in the midsection will also tighten things up and thus improve the handling.

Dude if you can afford it I would go for a better system such as Seastar or Seastar pro. That Baystar system will give you no head room for power upgrades in the future.

Thanks JBD. Your explanation makes a lot of sense.

I'm planning to do all this work over the winter, so I'll investigate the hydraulic route during the week and look at systems. I've not actually seen anywhere selling twin-cable systems. In fact, I've seen precious few places selling anything at all to do with small powerboats. Seems if you're not a Yachtie then most 'Marine' outfits don't want to know.

Freedom: Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by the insurance quote too. I haven't tried RA Carter yet, but I may do. I didn't hold anything back on details though. Other than 'Maximum design speed' where I just had to put 'Unknown', but other than that I gave them all the information they wanted.
You've got an ICC and RYA Level 2 powerboat certificate I take it? Maybe the fact that I have has helped, I don't know... Can't hurt to prove to the insurers that you've taken training I guess.

Teleflex do a dual cable rack mount steering assembly. Tends to be special order only, should be around £250.00 ish, but don't quote me.

Thanks Tony! I'll make some enquiries.

Anyone have any details of favoured speedboat chandleries? Mail order or any useful contact info at all?

Any PM's or posts gratefully received.

Anyone know where the serial number would be located on my Ring 18?
I've got the insurance details to fill out, and whilst I can find the engine number easily enough, they want hull serial too and I'm damned if I can find it.
Also, am I right in thinking that maximum design speed would be about 60 kts?
Mike Ring's site lists dimension, limitations of engine size, speed etc, but only for the current range, which seems to start at 21ft or thereabouts.
Euromarine want all kinds of info, such as LOA. beam, etc and I can't find any reference on Ring Powercraft's site to their old models. Guess I'll just have to pop out with my tape measure!

Also, what age would you say the hull and engine were from the pics? 1991 or so? Earlier?

Any information gratefully received - as always!

You should find it on a piece of paper, laminated to the underside of the dash.
