Power trim oil

Hi All,

Can anyone advise the correct oil/grade to use in the merc offshore trim rams? I rebuilt the cylinder at the beginning of the season with all new seals and was advised to use your bog standard ATF (which I did). Six months later the ram is dropping to the fully trimmed in position when trimmed out (after a few seconds). There are no external oil leaks on the ram or pump itself so I expect one of the 'o' rings on the piston has failed and the oil is finding its way from one side of the piston to the other. I've also checked the oil level in the pump and it's OK.

The cylinder was thoroughly cleaned before I re-assembled it last time, so I'm expecting one of the seals may have perished rather than torn or worn through.

Has anyone else had any similar problems with these?

Cheers,

Ollie

ATF, Dexron 2 or 3 should be ok. Some of the older pumps used to use 10W40 oil aswell. That's abit thicker but it shouldn't leak with either oil in. It normally just changes the speed of your trim with the thicker oil in the system. If you have no external leaks I would check the pump is holding pressure first.

It's one of the pumps with the steel reservoir underneath so I guess that's one of the old ones? Is there an easy way of checking if the pump's holding pressure?

trim pump

Hi
have you checked the relief valve on the pump? its the small plastic knob between the hose outlets, even if its slightly loose it'll bleed the pressure from the ram.
