Prop Sizes...

Hi All

Just wondering if i could get some info for this next boating seasons on Props!

I have an avenger 21 with rover v8, last year i was struggling to get 36kts outa her at 5k rpm, and oil pressure was starting to drop like a brick. So.. i am rebuilding the engine, found the crank to be pitted with rust... so im hopin for a few more ponies with after i put it back together after new rings, heads cleaned and valves lapped and some good oil pressure at top end.

But what im thinking is i have a volvo penta leg which i am fairly sure is similar to an AQ270, with a smallish spp type prop.

Am i right in thinking that i should play around with this type of prop?

Has anyone got a similar set up that could work?

If so i am wondering if anyone has some ones to try as they look very expensive - not that i mind buying one when i have found the right one!

Sorry im still a little bit new to outdrives - but am willing to learn and have some fun this summer!!

Cheers!

Will

Am I right in thinking thats a 1 inch 19 spline shaft? If so its going to be hard to come accross props to suit it, to experiment with!

Fantastic boat that Avenger real pedigree .
It depends which Volvo drive you have so I think some photos of the drive might be needed.
If it's a Volvo standard then it's a Volvo prop and they are common enough
If it's a Race Drive by Volvo with an aft mounted ram then a Mercury shaft might be fitted they are fairly common
What's up with the prop it came with ?
What metal is it ? Stainless, brass or alloy ?

Give Dave at steel developments a call. He is a prop specialist and may have something in stock. www.steeldevelopments.co.uk.

thanks guys! i think im still yet to unlock her full potential tho! hopefully this season!

Its a bronze prop, i completely forgot to see what size shaft and spline it is tonight where she is kept.. i have got a pic of it tho.

It has got 2 external rams, the last owner had said that it was a volvo race drive, but then again he said a lot of things so im never too sure When you say replace the shaft with a mercury one, do you mean just the propellor or the whole shaft?

Its no worries if it is the shaft, i have had the top gear box apart to replace the rusty old bearings. and it hasnt blown up yet!

I think the prop is just a little too small for its application, having seen some older penta props, its a bit on the tiddly side!

Thanks Renegrade, ill give him a buzz! his prices dont look too bad from his website, i wouldn't mind going for a shiny ss one as long as i know its the right one!

thanks!

Thats a 270E ,i may have some props you can try . i am sure i bought a chopper for mine and that ran well on a 19ft 6 ftetcher but i loaned that out and it never came back . i think they are 1.45 to1 ratio and can run both left and right hand props . i am allso sure i tried props from a mates 200mec outboard so splines must be the same . I painted mine black too that could even be my old box theres not too many of them about .

That would be really kind if you can! I have used the ID form from volvo and came to the same conclusion that its a 270e. Yes i beleive you have the right one, with the 1;45 to 1 and can use both RH and lh props, so hopefully got some options open. interesting that you can use merc props..

Renegade - sounds like a good link to have! Once i have found out the best match then ill probably be giving him a call. probs be looking for two props, one for speed and one for grunt. getting excited for this season already - even with this snow!

Thanks
Will

Lucky bugger it's a race drive alright !classic stuff even from 45 years ago . A simple fix to make sure you don't over rev it would be to cup the prop get it done by a specialist. It's a Merc shaft in the race drive so try merc props.
Tom59 on here has a contact (his old man) with an original prop for that drive.it was for a Jaguar powered Avenger.
What is the rovers rev limit ?
What size is stamped on the prop ?

Hi Big Dutch

Sorry i never saw your reply!! I have heard a few people say its a Merc drive, on closer inspection, its a 15 spline 1" shaft. So far i can only remember its a Radice prop.

Just rebuilt the engine and am very eager to put it back together and see what happens!

Cheers
Will
