questions about motors and boats

what is the difference between:

mercury xr2 and a normal merc 200hp 2.5 liter v6 outboard?

i see alot of 200hp mercurys with 2.5 liters but what is the difference between them and the 2.5 liter engines that have 260, 280 or even 300hp ?

what is the best setup for a 9meter long catamaran im not looking for excessive speeds but also dont want to underpower anyone has any suggestions ?

I'm by no means an expert, but in a nutshell...

The XR2 was a purpose built race motor for classes with a 2 litre capacity limit. The 2.5 200s are a lot more user friendly on a leisure boat, torquier and lower revving, in theory making them them more reliable. Both are carb'd.

The 2.5 260s and 280s are electronically fuel injected race motors, high revving, not really suited to long periods of idle or low rev cruising.

What kind of cat is it and what are you going to use it for? I'm sure others will be able to help with that

first of all thanks for the motor information ! this gives me a clear view on engines.
the boat is a cougar cat 28ft as far as i know its right now without any engines but but has got the seastar cables for twin engines and also foot throttle the boat is able to have 4 engines behind it although i will never do it cuz that would push me into bankrupsy with all the fuell cost haha.
the purpose of the boat will be most of the time cruising in my country there arent alot of spots too boat fast although sometimes i do like alot of speed thats the main reason why i bought a catamaran they say they are faster i dont know if its true or not.

If you want to go cruising you're looking at the wrong boat.

Cats can indeed be a lot faster than a V hull, but most are designed to run at a specific speed. At anything much below that you'll find it an absoulte dog to drive. They just don't work until you've got enough air passing under the tunnel/over the 'wing' to give it enough lift.

I'm sure there a sort of exceptions to this rule such as the ring cat, but definately not a cougar. If it's designed to run 4 outboards it's design speed is going to be high. Running it with half the power and trying to cruise is going to result in you having a very bad time. If you want to cruise, buy a V hull.

Cheers, James

If you've already bought the boat some photos of it and some idea of budget for the motors would be able to give people a better idea of what to suggest - twin 280's would make it go ok I'm sure but also a clearer idea of where you're going to use the boat would also help.

i have already bought the boat yes it stil has some work on it i have to repaint the black so it looks like "window" again haha and i will put in a new interieur.
with cruising i mean around 70-80kmh racing im looking at least for 120kmh.
my budget is 10 grand one of the reasons why i bought a cat is cuz i have people in my familiy who get sick on a V hull and dont have any problems on a catamaran.

here are some photo's and yes it was actually pressing to hard on the car when standing stil haha.

this boat is a cougar 28 foot(8,5meters/8,80 with engine mounting plates) this boat weighs around 800kg and is 2meter 50 wide.

if you know any history about this boat, its maker or its previous owners please let me know thanks

Never seen one of those before - I'm sure someone must know something about them on here though?

I think the best thing is to find out what it had originally on the back and found out what speed it did, it should be fairly easy to work out what power you would need for any speed then.

Does it have any manufacturers plate on it? Where are you that you can run fast on lakes and rivers?

There used to bo one of those in Poole quite a few years ago, with a single 275 Merc on it.

Pete at Cougars would be the man to talk to about them.

Richard Carr raced one (or something very similar) in Class 2 in the 80's

i do have those plates i will check them for info didnt rly take much time to check that plate except for the boat serial if that was correct

i live in the netherlands there are certain areas in "the rijn" where you can go as fast as you want to but there are also channels in the middle of holland where there isnt any police at all and those together with another area (waterski track) can be raced at with high speeds no problem.

A pair of 2.5L or 3L 200-250 hp V6's would be fine.
