R21 150hp

Hi everyone,

Have been saving my pennies over the last few months and now have pretty much everything to finish my boat... except the engine...

Have been looking at a 2004 Mariner 150HP Carb. 25" mid.

It has done minimal hours, has full service history and I know the chap who owned the engine before he part ex for a newer one so know all the details are true. Engine comes with the controls and a few different dials and a choice of prop.

The engine is priced at £3000 including fitting. Can get a jacking plate to raise it and the fit a 20" mid at a later date...

Going to be cruising alot but would like to tow a wakeboarder sometimes...

Will an R21 be pretty dull with this motor? Could I change the carbs at a later date to get some more HP?

Cheers for any info/advice

Andy

We ran a Ring 21 with a 200 and 150 many moons back the 150 did 58mph tops the 200 around mid 60's, so I recon even with a CLE gearcase and 20'' mid you are unlikely to get much over 60mph, fast enough for plenty of fun, however if you use the boat for recreation sports you may want to pitch down so even 60 would be out of reach ... a bit short on speed for some of the guys on here that need a min of 70mph on the GPS to bring a smile and therefore would only consider a 150 for a 13' Dory

Interesting... thanks for the reply cfun.

I'm very tempted by the engine as I dont think another one in as good nick will come up locally any time soon.

I'd love to see 70mph, but its my first (fast) boat so somewhere around the 50 mark would be fine to start.

Do you know what the differences are between the 150 and a 200? Is it possible to swap bits over to get more power out of the 150?

Cheers again, Andy

Hi Andy

Depends what your after really. This motor sounds like it is likely to be reliable and sounds well priced, however, i wouldn't have said it was a geat match for your boat.

I would have thought it would be underpowered with only 150 gg's and the boat will be hard to set up so it handles well with a 25". (im sure you could get a 20" mid for the price of a decent jack plate)

I had a 25" on my R21 and it handled like a pig

I would be looking for a 200 (+) 20" is i were in your shoes.

Plenty of well priced xr2 200's knocking about for at least a grand less than that and probably a few 2.5's too. Im sure you could even sniff out a 3.0 for the sort of money that you are looking to spend.

Thanks for the info Docta.

Had a good think about the 150, and came to the decision that i would probably get bored of 50mph fairly quickly... So paid the deposit on a new Optimax 200 yesterday... should have it all fitted and ready by end of january super happy

Cheers again for the info, greatly appreciated!

0ptimax 200

Hi Mate, I also have a 200 optimax which I find to be a good engine. Plenty of low down oomph to pull out wakeboards etc and reasonable on fuel. Think you will see 65-70mph with it.

What length leg have you got on the opti? I'd be really careful of the transom on tickled assuming it's a 20"... That top 5" looked really dodgy!
Edd's P20 goes very nicely with his 200 opti, economical too! I rekon you should see 70 too
Will be good to have another decent boat out there!

No worries mate

Sounds like you made a great decision. Should be a nice reliable rig now with plenty of grunt and reasonable on fuel

Would be great to see some pics?

Enjoy!

Should be an excellent combination, I am sure you will easily reach 70 mph++++
We ran on first test trip with our 20' Phantom and "lazy" 2 ltr 150 hp
66 mph: Total weight 820 kgs, 3 blade Ballistic 25' pitch: 6300 rpms, center prop axel 1" below, 2.1 gear ratio on CLE.

Changed engine and gear ratio this year for sure !
