race preping mariner

hi all i am going to be using my mariner 2.5 200 carb for racing next year and i would like to put 16amp electrics on and replace the reeds with carbon ones.

i know that i need to replace the stator and the flywheel for the electrics but i need to know if there is anuthing else that needs replacing as well.

i would also like to know what a good make/brand of carbon reeds would be.

any help would be appreciated.

Replace the diaphram in the mechanical fuel pump
New fuel filter
New Spark plugs

Check timing @ WOT (which you will have to do anyway if you are changing stator/trigger/flywheel to 16amp.

Would be a good idea to check compression too & do a plug chop @ WOT to make sure all cylinders are burning evenly.

The engine mounts :- nylon or ally and all the bushes !
(More important than electrics or reeds, I've done all of the above on a 2.5 mariner and 20thou off the heads)

The engine is black i am going for a bridgeport style cowl for next year and is on a offshore mid so mounts aren't a worry just wanted to know if I needed to do more than replace the stator which it seems I do. Thanks

Remove the regulators and replace with a 16 amp rectifier. Dump the oil injection and timing advance module.

As I recall it you ran with a silver alien cowl for a while big d and I have already removed the oil injection

Ok I'll revise my earlier post just check the bushes, where the trim ram connects to the saddle is the favourite for play and I would still take 20 thou off the heads!

Speak to Lee Gorvel mate he did mine when I cooked the 40amp stuff. We did it in the pits so it wasn't hard

Also I just got some carbon reeds for my Evinrude from Chris Carson Marine in the US. Read very good things about his reeds, they were well priced and only $5 shipping. Search for him on ebay.com, there's a few different version depending on how high you want to rev

Dont be tempted to switch to electric fuel pump, they are more trouble than they are worth. Just make sure that the mechanical pump is in good condition and both diaphrams are good.

sound advice cb1 wasnt going to anyway no point adding in suff you dont need when it is just another thing that can go wrong

Cut heads to yeild 145 lbs cranking at sea level, I use TDR reed valves in my all out race as well as recreational engines they are bullet proof TDR has been building reeds for 35 years....IMO I'd stay away from carbon fiber reeds , stick with the poly resin reeds I find them to be MUCH more durable in our racing gasoline as well as our alky Drag race engines turning a zillion RPMs...

thanks for the advice jay but i am not realy looking to get any more power out of the engine and i want to keep it as reliable as possable so i dont want to start playing with things like commpression just want to be able to rev it to 6500rpm without worrying about melting electrics or breaking reeds.

You can spend ££££££'s on the mechanical side, but if the balance of the boat ain't right you'll be wasting your money. That, and a prop that works for you, and the boat and you both are at ease with. When she's flying it looks good but your losing speed. Your aim should be to get the best possible AVERAGE speed in a race, not just out and out top speed that you can only use for 10% of the time.

cb1 your right that the top speed is not as relivant as being able to maintain a good avrage got the boat set up well this year with a good prop. i have got the top speed to 72mph and i could do 60mph through pritty much anything (within reason) i dont think it is realistic to expect much more speed if any just dont want to go breaking stuff on the engine by over revving it and ruin a race weekend.
