Rebuilt engine

Hi can anyone advise how long it takes for a rebuilt engine to loosen up. Mines done about 18hrs but still doesn't rev my prop as far as the previous identical engine. Thanks :-)

How many rpm are missing? same gear ratio?

The rebuilt engine should be more powerful than the last. The last one one a 225hp 2003 optimax with 250 hrs.

The new one is a 2006 225hp opti but with 250xs ecu, fuel rails, carbon reeds, filters and its had new big ends, small, ends and new rings.

Has it been put in break in mode? My understanding is that opti break in hours only start coming down after 2000 rpm or something like that.

Not as far as I'm aware Paul, it revs to 5050 just doesn't make the 5350-5400 the last engine did.

I am wondering if I'm getting full throttle, they had a bit of trouble with the throttle sensor going off on the low setting. I'll check tomorrow.

You need to plug the DDT in and test the Tpi and other sensors

Just realised you can set the ecu to break in mode. Same as the e-tec's. that could well be it mate.

Okay after much googling I have discovered that the engine will continue to double oil until 2hrs run time over 2500rpm have been achieved.

So seems like I have an excuse to go out again tomorrow night HaHa :-)

Break-in mode does not make any limits in performance.

You should be out of break in mode many hours ago as break in is best performed around 4000 - 5000 rpm with change in rpm every 5 min for the first 3 hours. Proper break in takes around 10 hours runtime.

Have you run it since the rebuild or did the previous owner do the break in?

Hi the previous owner did the break in. I only bought it yesterday with 18hrs done since the rebuild.

Have you checked the compression numbers to make sure the rebuild and break in was done properly? Better yet a leak-down test.

Also make sure your engine is actually reaching WOT, could be as simple as a incorrect adjusted throttle plate.

Hi Martin, was a long day yesterday fitting the engine. Going to go down tonight and have a look see if its anything obvious. Could be mistakes happen when your tired. Thanks Dave

The engines all good, a different person paid David Crawfords Marine in Lymington to check the engine over. He then didn't come up with the money.

I spoke with David Crawfords guy who came over to Warsash to look at the engine and he said it was in very good working order and could find nothing wrong with it.

Yes lol but I don't think we are getting wide open throttle, there's something wrong as the throttle alarm is going off. Couldn't check very easy on my own, last night, will take a mate tonight and have a look.

OK sounds like you could have TPS problems.


Check that you can actually reach WOT position:

1. Disconnect throttle cable from attachment point at engine.

2. Confirm that engine can reach WOT by MANUALLY operating the throttle arm on side of engine. Shutters should be about .020" (1/16" if working with the roller/cam) from their mechanical stop (so as not to "hammer" the throttle plates and cause premature wear.



3. Adjust throttle cable so that it holds ENGINE throttle arm FIMRLY against the IDLE STOP (usually the BOTTOM screw on the black throttle arm, port side of engine). DO NOT alter ANY SCREW SETTINGS on this throttle arm!

4. Connect cable with attachment nut, snugging the nut down. BACK NUT OFF 3/4 turn (the black plastic washer should spin freely under the nut).
