Ring 16 or Phantom 16?

Hi, im looking at buying a 16ft Ring or Phantom, and was wondering if anyone has any opinions on which is better?

Also, what size engine? I've heard that putting more than a 90hp won't make it much quicker, but don't know if this is true?

Go for the Phantom, a lot more forgiving and a more versatile, goes well with a Yammie 90 and does not have the tendancy to porpoise so mucgh as the ring does.

you'll probably be better getting an 18' Phantom. Theres not a HUGE ammount of overall size on a P16, but its likely to be a much easier task trying to get hold of one.

I was after a 16 as it would fit in a garage during the winter.

I've found a couple for sale,
Phantom 16 + Yamaha 130, and a Ring 16 + Mercury 90 (for £1000 less).

Just wondering if its worth paying more for the Phantom, or would the Ring be just as much fun? (and less money).

Hi jonbeare and welcome @ boatmad.
You'll find out you've come to the right place to get your info

I'm driving a 16ft ring with a 140hp Evinrude. I'm using my boat only in fresh water, only for recreational purposes : wakeboarding, waterski, speed runs.

According to the previous owner the engine is a bit tuned upto about 160hp.
I cannot compare my R16 to the P16 but I can explain to you how mine behaves...
It does +65mph and therefore I can keep up with the bigger 18->21ft boats with standard engines. A 90hp engine can probably get you upto 45 / 50mph. But if you wanna go faster with it, you must have horsepower + you must use this horsepower very efficiently by having a good setup.

I can assure you that the top speed rides are not for the faint of heart!!. You must try to master the chinewalk (as in every fast V-bottom) Also, it is a very light boat (the P16 probably weighs even less?). It's therefore difficult to drive fast in the rough. Not comfortable at all.
My ring behaves well in corners. My prop doesn't lose bite, slight tendency to hook, and great acceleration out of the corners. Also great straight forward acceleration (hole-shot)

You will notice that setting up the right engine height is very very important.
You can read more about this my 'setup thread' :
http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6073

Maybe the most important : 1000pounds sounds cheap. Be sure not to buy a wreck. Check the transom for cracks and the steering. those are key.
I think you can't go wrong with a Phantom or a Ring, as both boats are excellent.

Best of luck,
And stay with it !
T.

Thanks for all the info...

Toffy, your boat sounds insane!! I had a quick read through the setup thread you started, might have to re-read it when i finally get a boat. It looks amazing too, was it like that when you bought it, or did you have it re-painted?

Rockey, boat looks great, and very new! I'm in Bournemouth so perhaps not too far from you? Might have to come and have a look at it.

Anyone else who has anything for sale, please let me know.

Well, thanks for the compliment !
My boat indeed is a fun ride, it could get better though. But then I would have to spend some money. And since I'm looking for a bigger (smoother!) 21ft ride, I'm gonna save my money for that...

Original colour was red. Previous owner did a repaint in black. It's quite shiney, but it's not perfect. The gelcoat isn't "elastic" enough, as there are some cracks... The interior is new, I've put it in red leather. This took a while, but the result was very nice.

Rockey showed me the pics of his Ring in the past. It seems to be younger than mine and in perfect condition. It also has adjustable trimtabs at the back. I can change mine only mechanical after each ride, not while boating.
To be short : I think Rockey's rig is very nice ! Don't know if it's for sale.

I also see some rings for sale on "boats and outboards". This one also "looks" very nice, a bit old though...

Again, 1000 pounds is cheap...

Having had both with 90 Yams, I would not hesitate in going for the phantom

@Wacky Racer : Why do you think it's better than the Ring ?
Having had both, you seem in excellent position to make an objective comparison...

@jonbeare : Having read all the comments in my thread http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7370 I also think Phantoms are a bit better than Rings... but again, I think they both are great boats.

Or you could get one of these

Its a 16ft reiver, not too many about, but a good solid lightweight boat.Got a few mph on the p16 too. I get over 56mph with a standard 90hp with a standard 21"prop, handles well in the rough too, but cant turn as tight as a p16 but unless your gonna race it that dont matter. If I didnt have this I would buy a p16 for sure.

Engine is a bit small really.

It seems Ring vs Phantom is a pretty big debate!!
I think if i was gonna race it then i'd get a Phantom, its lighter and everyone else uses them!
But Rings look like much nicer boats inside, and if theres not that much between them in terms of speed/handling/etc, then perhaps a Ring would be a better bet for spending the summer in.

Interior is of secondary importance. You can always dress it up later, like I did.
You can put in other seats, change your gauges, put in a foot throttle,... and so on, and on...
Be sure to buy a boat that's technically OK = good engine, strong crackfree transom, hull undamaged... Also the steering must be good. If not, change it, like I did!!! My boat had dual cable, but the steering was very heavy. I did an inspection and I found out that 1 cable was cracked, the other one cracked while inspecting it. In fact a had NO cable -> this inspection turned out to be 'life-saving'. Can you imagine losing the steering while doing 65mph ???. I made a mistake putting in a new single cable steering. I got bad advice on this from my supplier. It works smooth, it's strong enough, and is of good quality,... but single cable systems always have some slack. At high speeds you must control the chinewalk and then you want to avoid having slack on your steering...

My conclusion :
motor, transom, hull, steering,.... -> then interior.

To put things into perspective : I'm just a Belgian boat-enthousiast. There are some racing people here on boatmad whom have lot's of experience. They can tell you a lot more, but I hope my info can already be useful to you.

Greets, T.
