Ring 21 with Mercury Optimax 300xs
Hi, I am new here and it is great to find that there are so many boats like mine still running. I recently bought a Ring 21 and am thinking of rigging it with a 300 xs. What top speed do you guys think is posibble? Any info on rigging is appriciated, what prop should I use, it is a sportmaster gearcase
Thanks

I've never seen a 90 or mid 90's mph ring or phantom, not in ski race set up and not with 1 engine. Anyone being honest racing in F2 would say they are only doing 80mph max and thats on a fast flat day and maybe for 3 laps, and thats the leaders !!

At Cardiff this year we were keeping up with the leaders on the first few laps with an old Ring 20 and a Standard 2.5 260 HP (in good trim!) we GPS just before at 77 mph (does need a good driver to drive through the Chining) I think that confirms Dangerous remark!!!! Mr Grimes used a tuned 2.5 280 to be sure of beating us !!!

although the power figure might have been some what suspect
i belive Burty managed more than 90
in a single engined p20
personally never understood why he didnt take it to records week
i run a r18 with a 225 promax and best weve ever seen.. gpsd was 76.7
so i can imagine thers more to be had than 80

With the Rib we managed 91.5mph with a standard 280 EFI, and we used to run 85mph offshore in slight chop, obviously it is very different to a Phantom / Ring being stepped, lifter, a Rib etc, but it did weigh about 950kg, so I think a Ring 21 set up for speed should be around a similar figure and certainly into the 80's?

Mid 80's with a good setup would almost certainly handle better with a 260/280 EFI though !!
My Bernico ran same speed with std 260 as it did with the 300xs (94mph) but more stable with the 260.
Good Luck
Bob
