Ring transom cracks

Hi guys!

At the club there's a 21ft Ring for sale. It has transom cracks and that doesn't look good to me. Also the engine mounts and hydraulic lift need to be looked at since there is some slack. It carries a 225hp Evinrude V6 looper which is tuned to about 260hp. So this is a very powerfull combo, and the testdrive at the club yesterday proofed it to me, once again !

Now, is it true that every Ring has transom cracks... ?
Is this exactly the weak spot of Ring powercraft boats ?
What's the max horsepower that transom can take ?
When you look at the pictures, does it need a rebuilt... or should I concider this (as the seller tells me) indeed as normal for Rings...

Thanks! T.
PS : don't mind the relative dirty condition, boat and engine weren't cleaned.

Some boat pics, to give you an idea of the whole boat.
As you can see, it's in relative good condition, although it could use some TLC => the wiring at the back could be a bit better... (eg. the starboard side pic above)

Thats a older style CMC jackplate, it will have play in it because of the design even a new cmc jack plate has play to allow it to slide, but its proberly very tired by now so has big play.

I dont like the look of the transom!
The max power for a transom depends massivly on its age and condition,
here is a pic of a p18's hull i.d. it has a xr2 on the back and you can see its got craizings.
Our p20 (TheMutzNuts) Has over 350 hp on the back of it with 4.75" setback and the transoms dry, solid and had no crazings.

I think the Cmc is tired which has lead to excessive play and this play has lead to the transom cracking from the engine kicking back and fourth and causing huge amounts of stress

I agree, it's like you've read my thoughts about this. You can actually see the engine is unstable when this boat makes small wave jumps...
I have a cool vid which shows a fly by of last sunday (wmv 2.5Mb) but I don't know how to post it here...

Concerning the jackplate :

I don't have experience with hydraulic jackplates : is it customary to change them every x years because of the fatigue ? Or can you "repair" it into a more stable condition using fill rings or whatever solution is proper ?

Concering the transom :
Indeed it doesn't look good. I got the advice to buy this boat/engine/trailer combo for the asking price of 7500€. That price is concidered relative low in Belgium where I live. I would run it one season with a "repaired" jackplate, the transom in current condition. Then see if the transom cracks get worse. If they do, do a polyester repair on the inside and seal everything up. If that doesn't work : do the big works = complete transom rebuilt.

Please advize.
Thanks ! T.

PS : +350hp on your P20 ?? wow, how fast do you go with that ?? Saw your P20 before, but didn't realize the horsepower your driving... Got any vids ??

IMVHO the transom is fecked. IIRC the only proper way too repair is to split the hull and deck. It's financially not worth doing and may be dangerous to run asis.

Email me the vid: ross_mac@hotmail.com
just get a new jackplate, the latter cmc lifts have wider slide bearings, but i still wouldn't go back to cmc after having a Gorilla 3!
also the Detwiler is a really nice, strong peice of kit but abit on the slow side and its quite long aswell.

where did you see our p20?
top speed....hopefully be comfirmed this weekend if we can get the timing set up and the gps dosen't die on us.

So, If I can't do a proper transom repair I should leave it alone then...?
I know I guy in the Netherlands that just finished his transom repair during which he splitted his hull and deck... Such a transom repair is only financially worth doing when you can do it yourself

People on the club say : hey,... Every Ring cracks on the transom...
I guess you guys are far more critical and 'on the safe side' about this...
But you as former Ring-builders should know best, my initial enthusiasm -again- has faded away ,... I'm gonna sleep it over...
Thx ! T.

Just read your post (busy traveling back to work on the last couple of days!!) - I have a Ring 18 with a 150 XR2 mounted on a manual jacking plate with a 5" layback and can confirm that there is NO cracking evident on the transom.
Actually I have only just drilled some some pilot holes in the transom when I fitted my trim tabs last week and the wood appears solid and dry.
In fact the whole boat is in a generally good condition, not sure of her age but no major areas of damage or 'crazing' on the gel coat. In fact i had her up to 70MPH registered on the Speedo last year, not actually clocked it on the GPS yet so not sure how accurate that is.

So much for the quote 'Every ring cracks'
Thanks for that info Ring Owner

Still sleeping it over btw... I never did a transom rebuilt before, nor do I have experience in polyester works. I do have detailed internet info on this topic (eg from Roy's rebuilt) and I know some people with polyester experience who can come over to my place and give me advice... Is it wise to risk it ?

"Is it wise to risk it ?"

If the price is nice you can take the risk , but it needs a new transom 100% unless what the salesman tels you .

This boat with wasted transom and hydraulic lift isn't worth 7500€... What's your opinion ? However this can be a beautifull project, it just takes time, the right equipment, materials, proper advice and the help of my brother

Greets T.
PS : did you change the engine again to a Suzuki 140 ?

Haha, nope i didnt!

Dont know or it's worth it or not. Dont know how much time and effort you want to put in it!

It's you that has to decide... But i think you can get a better one with a jounger motor for not so much more than 7500€...
