Staggered engine layout

Can someone tell me, is the benefit of a staggered engine layout weight distribution, or the fact you can mount the drives closer together? or a bit of both, and which is most beneficial????

A bit of both.

The advantage from a weight distribution point of view, would depend on lots of things, so that will vary from boat to boat, but having the drives closer together, (and thus deeper, with the same 'X') is a nice benifit.

As well as moving the C of G forward, it also slightly lowers it.

It also has the added advantage of allowing fat people to work on the motors!
