Styre 144vti engines

A mate has just bought a mitchell fishing boat. 7metre boat with the 144vti engine on bravo 2. What are styre engine like?
When I lifted the lid the back of the engine was evident that there was an exhaust leak as there is soot over the back. Started it and a little bit of smoke came from the turbo. Between the exhaust housing and compressor housing so he needs a new turbo. Also he has a really bad gear rattle from the top of his drive. Is this a problem with the bravo 2 without a drive shower??

Drive rattle in the upper gears is pretty normal with Bravo's on diesel. (at idle and a little above)

Yes but you can't hear your self talk over the rattle. As soon as the revs rise it goes?

Normal, especially with a 4 cylinder motor. mines like that with 8 cylinder motors, they've been like it since day one, 300+ hrs / 4000+ miles ago.

You wouldn't opt for a rebuild or check top gear set? Is a bravo 2 overkill for a 140hp 4cyl?

If it's quiet once off idle, and is quiet underway and when turning, I doubt there's anything wrong at all., so save ya wonga.
An Alpha might be ok with that small diesel, but I can't see the point in changing as there's not that much of a weight saving, plus the Alpha has that revolting outboard style dog clutch gear shift....K K K K K... KLUNK into gear...nasty, the Bravo's cone clutch system is way, way nicer.

Update!
I removed the drive as my mate was unhappy with the noise. I have another bravo 2 off a customers boat that I put on, I know that one is quiet. tightened a couple of nuts and ran it up..
noise is still there so its inside.
will lift the engine out and have a looksy.
while its out he wants to get it put on a dyno, where can I send it to have it dynoed??
it only revs to 2800rpm, the old owner said he tried lots of different props and had no luck raising the revs (maybe the turbo housing leak)
I will source a new turbo and get that right before sending it but he does want it tested.
