Sunseeker top end speed???

I have a Sunseeker Superhawk 34 with a pair of 300hp Yanmar 6LPA-STZP on Bravo 3 drives and 26" duoprops.

Dimensions:
-----------
Beam 3.11m
Displacement 5,800kg (but see note below)
Draft (drives up) 0.65m drives down 1.15m
LOA 11.34m
LWL 8.65

All the magazine reviews I have read for the boat are based on Volvo engines which were the most common. For example they talk about speeds of 45 knots with KAD300 (285hp) engines. The KAD range is heavier than the Yanmar (good!) but the Volvo drive is slimmer in the water (not so good!).

Either way I am struggling to get out of the early 30 knots range...clean bottom, just serviced, new injectors. This is probably down to my driving style and getting used to drive trim etc as previously I was on shafts.

Anyway...question is what speed should I realistically expect from one of these so I know when to stop trying and fiddling with the trim?

Cheers
Stef

I don't know your boat but I would have thought 35knots-ish max.

Expecting 45knots with two KAD300 and your boat weight would be silly.

To me your speed sounds down you should be seeing about the same speeds as the volvo's! Yanmars have rubish excelleration 'put the hammers down go make the tea and a sandwich and just as you finish all hell lets loose and you wear the lot' but their top end is usually good especially with their weight.
You should be seeing 3800 rpm this will give you an indication as to weather there is a problem or not. There is some easy mods to make if you suffer with excelleration to the drives if they havn't allready been done. Give me a call if you get stuck 01202 660110

probably should have mentioned RPM...am seeing 3800 no problems...so happy that the engines are good.

that's the problem...motoring along nicely...but at what speed shall i stop futzing around with power trim, tabs etc

will try for another run at the weekend and see what's up...but sounds like i should be getting more than 40

should get about 40 and your probably find that every time you go to the boat you or the other half will have a trolley full of kit!! and it never comes off ! just check that you have not got loads of kit on the boat as most of it also goes up the front which is the worst place for it! tabs and drives down hit the hammers then as she comes up lift the tabs right up then the drives about 1/2. the other thing is there are two types of props norm and cupped might have the norm on there might be woth checking next time she is out! most specks are usually 1/4 water max 1/4fuel and there is not kit but you should be getting more than 30. hope this helps

Stef,

as a guide the xps34 with 2x200 was doing 34 knots with a following tide wind no covers etc.

That is until the weekend when I found one of those infamous "Obstruction - Location not clear" marked on the Thames charts

So I would expect you to be getting a little better, although you're maybe slightly heavier you have the benefit of leg trim.

Can't see 40 knots though somehow.

Cheers, Kerry

Might have known you'd be along to gloat you bastard

For your information the bottom is still silky smooth and clean

The exhaust mess is what happens when you rip the exhaust bellows apart and all your boost goes tits from the trauma caused inside the boat around the steering rack / intercooler.

Hey Kerry....I have tried but cannot get my leg to trim like you have recommended in your photo...is that a special "Southend leg?"

Seriously though that looks painful AND expensive. Everyone okay??

Looks like my speed is my "driving style" and not the boat set up...

Cheers

That is great news!!! Cheers very much...same set up, early 40 knots...something to aim for.

Looks like I need to try harder with tabs and trim...and double check my weight!!!

PS is your mate the one with the blown Yanmar on Ebay? I thought that looked like a Superhawk. Was thinking about buying the knackered engine for spares...but the hours were a bit high.

Stef it takes a speshul knack to be able to get it that shape. Basically you have to drive as fast you can at something solid.

Can't believe just the one leg got it. Not a mark on the bottom so christ knows what I hit.

Boat hooked straight over on it's side from the leg driving at a funny angle and the next thing I knew was having the wife taking my jewels in her hand and explaining that she didn't like the experience. No sense of adventure I'm afraid

Anyway Volspec are £2500 richer and I'm the same amount poorer. All rebuilt just waiting on one more part tomorrow and back in all done so only 7 days lost

Anyway your boat. I think there's some odd claims on here about 45 knots all day long etc. You need to be realistic about your actual speed.

The difference between empty and full tanks will be close to a tonne.

You will no doubt be carrying at least another 500kg of bits and bobs that aren't there on a bare boat out of the factory. Think fenders, lifejackets, bedding, gas canisters, provisions and of course the drinks cabinet.

Are you on ally or stainless props. Worth possibly 2 knots.

Have you stripped the covers right off or left part up and furled the rest. Covers can account for another 2 or 3 knots.

Are you running with or against the tide. Our tidal races can be up to 6 knots around here and make a big difference.

With or against the wind. Again it will make a difference.

What speedo are you using. Forget about using a log, ring it up on your GPS and play with trims until you get the best with no tabs on at all except that needed to keep the boat level.

If you are putting one tab partly down to counteract any lean then that will knock speed off.

It is possible to trim the engines differently to take out any tabs used to balance the boat and sometimes this is more efficient.

How clean and polished is your bottom. You may just have been antifouled but this time of year round here just a weeks worth of growth will take 1 or 2 knots off until you have cleared it.

How much toe in have you got on the drives. Fastest is no toe in but not very driveable. Too much and you are not getting the power put to best use.

Then have a play with something like this and you see that probably 40 knots is what you should be aiming for.

COMEDY!

I have all weekend this weekend to play...so will start by unloading "stuff"...and taking covers down, didn't know they made that difference!!!

Running SS props TICK; Already on GPS TICK

Have filled in all redundant holes in the hull too (old log etc).

Fuel about 50% according to guage (no idea if accurate WHOOPS!!!!). Water...it only carries a teacup-full so no problem emptying that before going out.

Just need a nice day, no wind and no other half to complain about endless speed trials and tim testing.

Thanks for the good words Kerry and all...let's see what the summer brings!!
